About the role
National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
We will be responsible for developing whole-energy Regional Energy Strategic Plans (RESPs) for 11 regions across Great Britain, empowered through recent Ofgem decisions and an ongoing consultation.
The Northwest RESP will need to reflect regional characteristics, driving whole energy considerations across all energy vectors. Think: renewables, heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, energy networks, transport and flexibility! As well as considering how each region’s needs differ yet come together in forming the Great British energy plan.
To achieve this, we need a Northwest of England based team – to work alongside our other regional and central teams in forming the hub and spokes needed for energy planning to benefit from and reflect local inputs.
Developing the Northwest of England RESP will require us to work with organisations at a local level (‘local actors’) including local government and gas and electricity networks, to improve understanding of the infrastructure needed in different parts of the country and attract investment for projects. Stakeholder engagement will be key to unlocking the benefits of integrated regional energy planning.
This is the first time we will have a regional presence. Alongside your regional manager, you will be the first to establish and commence energy planning work within your region. Regional teams will continue growing in 2025.
As the RESP Implementation Analyst (Northwest), you will contribute to the development of the region's RESP by providing robust supporting analysis and contributing to a range of projects. This will include: undertaking quantitative and qualitative analysis of key aspects of the whole energy system in your region; collaborating with key internal and external stakeholders; maintaining and strengthening cross-team working with other regional and central teams, and; leading on specific individual pieces of work in developing and then delivering RESP. This work may include both regional-focused projects (e.g., analysis of the current state of your region's energy system), as well as central work (e.g., contributing to the RESP methodology development). You will report to the RESP Regional Manager and will work closely with other members of the regional team.
Having an understanding and lived experience of the North West of England will be key.
This role will initially be based from home, but transition to the North West office once opened early-mid 2025. Some travel will be expected (e.g., to NESO Warwick Office for central team workshops or within regions to meet with key stakeholders). We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key Accountabilities
This role's key accountability will be ensuring their regional team's implementation of RESP is backed up by robust analysis, with insights effectively communicated to a wide range of stakeholders. The implementation analyst will:
* Lead on individual pieces of analysis, being responsible for structuring and project managing their own work, managing their own time, providing regular progress updates and delivering work of the required quality to meet deadlines
* Create new ways to analyse and present problems and potential solutions, sometimes building on the work and experience of others to quickly develop sufficient understanding of unfamiliar topics in developing the RESP
* Work collaboratively with other members of the RESP regional and central teams, and with other teams across NESO
* Confidently interact with a broad range of external stakeholders. Support the identification and prioritisation of new stakeholders to engage. Represent the company when communicating with external stakeholders, keeping clear records of interactions through our CRM system.
* Design, support and assist in facilitating workshops and other group working sessions to progress the development and implementation of RESP in your region
* Produce and deliver clear, concise, short reports and slide packs in progressing the RESP. Ensure that the key messages are relevant, clear, and pitched appropriately for the audience.
About you
We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:
* The ability to undertake quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and synthesise and communicate insights to a wide range of audiences (e.g., Local Authorities, GDN/DNOs, Government, general public)
* Excellent interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills
* Experience of tracking and reporting on project implementation
* A conscientious approach to defining and managing their own work, with a proactive approach to raising issues or concerns early
* Technical understanding or ability to learn energy industry standard methods and assumptions for analysing the environmental, social and financial inputs, impacts and outputs of projects
* An understanding and curiosity in planning for a ‘whole energy’ system – ideally, with experience in one of the energy vectors (gas and/or electricity networks, heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, transport decarbonisation, etc) or demonstrated willingness to learn
* An ability to translate complex information into succinct reports and presentations
* An inquisitive mind with the ability to join the dots and a willingness to learn about new areas of work
About what you'll get
A competitive salary between £45,000 - £53,000 – dependent on experience and capability. As we work towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more affordable future for all, we also work towards creating a place for our teammates to belong, with professional and personal growth and positive well-being.
