JOB PURPOSE:
Reporting to the General Manager, the Technical Manager is a key player in the Senior Leadership Team. The primary objective of the role is to manage all aspects of the Technical function including Quality, Specifications, Compliance and NPD whilst maintaining the Grade AA* BRC accreditation and ensuring high food safety, legality, TACCP and hygiene standards are achieved and where possible exceed customer expectations and auditing body / legal requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Leading all Technical functions; including food safety & quality, legal and compliance, specifications, NPD, and hygiene to achieve the business objectives whilst achieving individual and departmental KPI’s.
* Ensure excellent Technical relations with Operations, Engineering, Purchasing, NPD and supplier auditing colleagues.
* To provide an effective and timely response to all technical issues, including quality and food safety challenges seeking permanent solutions to the key issues; forming a key part of any Crisis Management response team within all TAFC operations.
* The management, review and development of all aspects of the company’s external customer and third party approval, its food safety / quality systems, hygiene standards and due diligence defences.
* To identify, develop and establish departmental and customer KPI’s.
* Ensure timely monitoring, improvement and management including trend analysis of customer & consumer complaints, supplier complaints, complaints costs, adherence to customer expectation, NC reporting, audit findings etc.
* To manage and improve technical contracts in conjunction with the Quality Manager, including micro and chemical laboratories, pest control service, calibration services, technical memberships etc.
* Quality Assurance – in conjunction with specifications, good practice and legal requirements, establish robust quality checks from raw material to packaging to finished goods.
* To manage microbiological monitoring (ingredients, intermediate, finished product and environmental) ensuring appropriate and timely action to be taken and the identification of trends.
* Ensure a suitable food safety training programme and policy adherence is sustained within manufacturing and technical departments.
* To provide technical advice and recommendations throughout the business, taking a resolution and continuous improvement approach to problem solving.
* Build strong relationships, liaising both proactively and reactively with customers and Enforcing Authorities.
* To manage the Technical Department budget.
* The management and development of all aspects of due diligence for third party suppliers and business partners
* To ensure the standards, behaviours and activities of all are in compliance with the requirements of the business HACCP and Quality Management Systems, the requirements of the standards, policies and codes of practice of the customers of TAFC and the requirements of the current versions of the adopted 3rd party standards, BRC Global Food Safety and International Food Standard.
* To ensure that TAFC Health & Safety standards are met in all activities under your control to ensure that a safe working environment is provided for all employees, visitors and contractors.
* To ensure that TAFC Environmental standards are met in all activities on the site to ensure minimum impact to the environment.
ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES/SKILLS/ QUALIFICATIONS:
* Food Science/Technology related degree or HND/HNC
* Successfully completion of ‘Train the Trainer’
* Lead Assessor Qualified
* Ability to apply knowledge of food safety and food hygiene legislation including HACCP.
* Effective communication, influencing and persuading skills at all levels.
* Analysis of verbal, numerical and written information.
* Excellent organisational, motivational, prioritising, planning and time management skills.
* At least 2 years’ experience of managing a Technical function including Quality, Specifications and NPD.
