Director of Finance & Business Operations
We are proud to be supporting an outstanding comprehensive academy in Hertfordshire to appoint an experienced Director of Finance and Business Operations. Due to popular demand, the school has recently undergone expansion and a multi-million-pound refurbishment programme.
The Director of Finance and Business Operations will drive strategy, manage resources and maintain educational excellence across the school. This role provides financial oversight, compliance, and staff leadership while delivering strategic insights to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Trustees and stakeholders. The aim is to ensure the efficient and effective management of the School's operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Serve as Chief Finance Officer, leading the School’s financial strategy, compliance and sustainability
2. Advise the Headteacher, SLT and Trustees on financial matters, strategic risks, and funding agreement compliance
3. Prepare and manage the School's Annual Budget, forecasts, management accounts, and financial reports, including reports for Trustees
4. Lead a team of six including finance and premises
5. Act as Company Secretary, fulfil the role of Data Protection Lead and oversee health and safety
6. Ensure compliance with payroll, pensions, VAT and regulatory requirements
7. Oversee IT systems to support staff and students effectively
8. Support the HR Manager with financial administration of staff appointments, leavers, and other HR-related financial tasks
The successful Director of Finance and Business Operations will be a part/fully qualified accountant (ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA) with experience of financial and accounting regulation within an educational setting. You will have knowledge of procedures and regulations relevant to leading the finance function of an Academy. Fully IT literate with extensive expertise in using MS Excel and computerised financial systems (such as SIMS, Access and VERA) will be essential. Excellent numeracy and literacy skills will be matched with an ability to analyse and interpret financial information.
A natural leader with demonstrable evidence of strong leadership skills, you will be able to provide clear, concise advice and guidance to managers at all levels on a range of financial issues and in a range of formats. You will have the ability to plan successfully, implement and manage all financial aspects of a complex and fast-changing organisation. As a solution focused individual, you will have the ability to work creatively and under your own initiative to set and meet deadlines with a results orientated approach.
