Main duties of the job
As a Payroll and Pension Advisor, you will support the delivery of monthly and weekly payroll and pensions service to the Trust and its subsidiary company, CDD Services. The role involves maintaining employee assignments for pay related changes, interpretation and application of terms and conditions and industry regulations related to pay and pensions. You will be involved in the completion of the payroll processing and submission of statutory information. The postholder will also supervise and train other team members.
Job responsibilities
1. Interpret and apply information from NHS Employers, HMRC and NHS Pensions whilst adhering to Trust policy and procedure.
2. Authorise calculations for Pension Benefits.
3. Process statutory and non-statutory deductions as required by local and national demands.
4. Process documentation for pay related changes and events.
5. Perform required processing and calculations for employee absence.
6. Responsible for ensuring overpayments are calculated and recovery arrangements implemented.
7. Check and verify accuracy of payroll output in line with department procedures. Ensure that monthly payroll reports are checked and errors investigated.
8. Run processes pertaining to production of ESR weekly payroll.
9. Support with monthly ESR payroll processing.
10. Authorise and balance calculations for interim payments and recovery in ESR.
11. Identify returned BACS and process redirections.
12. Responsible for the day to day supervision of Payroll and Pension Administrators and Assistants including training, appraisals and return to work absence interviews.
Person Specification
Experience
* Previous experience working in a Payroll and Pension service.
* Worked within a busy team facing competing demands and pressures.
* IT Literacy essentially Microsoft Office and industry recognised Payroll software.
* Delivering high standard Customer Care.
* Worked to strict processing deadlines.
* Experience of working in NHS payroll or pensions or financial services sector. Using professional responsibilities ESR to process payroll.
Special Skills and Knowledge
* Excellent knowledge of payroll procedures, payroll legislation, and statutory legislation affecting Payroll.
* Ability to interpret and apply employer policies and procedures affecting pay.
* Can demonstrate excellent knowledge of pension auto enrolment and operating occupational pension schemes.
* Good organisational skills, enabling speed and accuracy.
* Excellent understanding of terms and conditions related to pay and how to interpret.
* Can demonstrate good working knowledge of industry recognised Payroll software.
* Ability to be self-motivated and agile and contribute to problem solving.
* Possess good communication skills and able to constructively challenge.
* Ability to empathise and negotiate and communicate complex and sensitive information.
* Ability to recognise when further support is necessary from Payroll Team Leader to deal with difficult situations.
* Ability to adapt to and deliver changes.
* Ability to constantly work well whilst under pressure of essential deadlines and changing workloads.
* Previous experience operating NHS payroll processing. Previous experience processing NHS or other public sector pension schemes. Operated NHS Terms and Conditions related to pay. Demonstrate working knowledge of ESR functionality as a professional user.
Special Requirements
* Able to travel across Trust sites to meet the requirements of the post.
* Deliver training and participate in awareness sessions about NHS payroll or pension matters such as roadshows and other Trust events.
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 4 in Payroll/Pension or significant equivalent experience gained through work experience in Payroll and Pension environment.
* Minimum 5 GCSE Grade C/4 including Maths and English or equivalent /equivalent knowledge and experience.
* Recognised IT Qualification or equivalent experience.
* AAT or other financial services training.
