The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of apprenticeships, which will commence in September 2025.
We are looking for an exceptional Network Engineering Level 4 Apprentice to help us make a difference to our planet.
The Network Engineer Level 4 Apprenticeship can offer you the support, training, and industry recognised qualifications to get you on the path to a career in the Digital profession.
This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.
Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week. Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.
Whilst this is a temporary position for up to 19 months, there is potential for it to develop into a permanent position on successful completion of your apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship can offer you the support, training and industry recognised qualifications to get you on the path to a career in Network Engineering.
Working towards the level 4 Network Engineer standard apprenticeship, the training will be delivered as effectively as possible for your learning style possibly including online as well as self-study, so candidates need to have a passion for their own development as well as be committed to the training and opportunities available.
You will have the opportunity to work with the Network Services team who provide data and voice communication services to the Met Office. The team is responsible for a range of services including LAN, WAN, private circuits, Internet, and voice services. In addition, the team provides a range of other services such as load balancing, security, and web filtering. This role will allow you to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding whilst contributing to the Met Office aims. You will also gain a nationally recognised qualification on successful completion of the programme.
You will be managed by a line manager and have a mentor to offer further support. In addition to the formal training with a registered training provider, you will also have in house and on the job training.
Key Duties
* Install, document, maintain and troubleshoot networking equipment.
* Assist in the supervision of network engineering works at Exeter HQ and remotely.
* Responding to and resolving incidents, investigating, and diagnosing network problems and working with users, other technical staff, and suppliers as appropriate.
* Implement changes as required by the business to meet the demands of systems delivery, including switch, load balancer and firewall configuration.
* The maintenance of local and wide area networks for the delivery of weather data and enterprise communications.
* Work closely with the lead network specialists and other IT experts within the Met Office.
We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/7/365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation.

Your starting salary will be £22,911.00 and you will have the opportunity to progress to £24,259.00 over time.
Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £32,339.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Essential Criteria, Skills and Experience
* Self-motivating with a real passion for Network and IT technologies.
* Demonstrates evidence of good oral and written communication skills.
* Has effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Can plan and organise work using your own initiative.
* Has a keen interest in IT and keeps up to date with current and future IT developments.
* Level 3 Qualification in a related subject (apprenticeship/A levels/BTEC etc) OR equivalent work experience.
Eligibility Criteria
In addition to the criteria listed above, you must also be eligible to qualify for apprenticeship funding by meeting the following:
* Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or another funded further education or higher education programme at the time you start this apprenticeship.
* Are applying for an apprenticeship that is unrelated to any qualifications you already hold at the same or higher level than this apprenticeship.
* Are living in England at the time the apprenticeship commences.
