Salary Range: £44,263 - £61,198 per annum
Introduction
The ocean is critical to life on our blue planet. Understanding how it is changing has never been more important.
In order to understand these changes, SAMS is expanding its science team and strengthening research in physical oceanography and marine biogeochemistry. Research in these areas is crucial to our understanding of climate change, weather patterns and marine ecosystems.
SAMS is a leading institute in climate-scale ocean research and is located on the west coast of Scotland, on the doorstep of the north-east Atlantic.
The Role
SAMS is seeking to flexibly appoint two Principal Investigators in Physical Oceanography. Both posts will provide leadership within the SAMS Physical Oceanography research team, generate world-leading research outputs, provide module leadership on SAMS Marine Science BSc course and/or other educational programmes, supervise students, and line manage and coach early career researchers.
This post will focus on basin-scale observational physical oceanography, particularly North Atlantic circulation and climate, to deliver SAMS National Capability project deliverables (AtlantiS and OSNAP programmes).
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have a PhD in Physical Oceanography or a relevant discipline, a strong background in mathematics and physics with a focus on geophysical fluid dynamics, and excellent scientific writing skills for international research proposals and high-impact journal publications.
You will have experience in leading research projects, managing staff/teams and budgets, and a track record of securing research funding through successful proposals. Experience in supporting higher education activities, such as teaching, supervising, and module leadership, is also important.
