Rapiscan Detection is an industry leader in detection technology, providing cargo and vehicle inspection systems and services for ports, borders, military, high-threat facilities, and checkpoints to help customers combat terrorism, drug smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud. We offer a broad array of scanning system configurations that leverage low, medium, and high-energy X-ray technology or multiple X-ray technologies to address each customer’s unique security application requirements. Our commitment to excellence in imaging performance, innovative design, and uncompromising quality ensures our solutions consistently deliver best-in-class imaging, high reliability, and operator satisfaction, to help customers find threats and contraband with ease and confidence.
Overview of role: This is an opportunity for an experimental X-ray scientist to join the X-ray source development team as part of a larger Engineering team designing new technologies for X-ray and CT imaging in the security market. The role will primarily involve the design and prototyping of new and novel X-ray sources but will also have an opportunity for involvement in the design of imaging systems. The role will suit an experimental physicist/scientist with some experience of X-ray or high power electron tube design.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Support the design and development of X-ray sources to improve image quality and threat detection capabilities in security screening systems.
2. Report into the Senior X-ray Scientist and provide design and experimental support for technology development.
3. Actively contribute to the design of key tube subsystems such as electron guns, cathode technologies, anode design, and high voltage insulators.
4. Carry out assembly and experimental validation of new tube developments.
5. Analyze experimental data, interpret results, and refine designs based upon findings.
6. Work collaboratively within the wider Engineering team to support the development of new imaging technologies.
7. Collaborate with the Production and Manufacturing Engineering teams to support the transfer of proven technologies into production.
8. Support the continual improvement of current production technologies and legacy systems.
9. Develop interactions with other science and engineering teams globally to engage on R&D projects.
10. Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
Candidate Requirements:
1. Postgraduate experience in experimental radiation physics.
2. Experience in the fields of ultra-high vacuum is required.
3. Experience of high voltage is advantageous.
4. Strong experimental skills, including the ability to design and conduct complex experiments.
5. Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and collaborate effectively in a developmental and manufacturing environment.
6. An understanding of X-ray dosimetry and shielding would be advantageous.
7. A PhD in experimental radiation physics or a related topic is preferred.
