Position: Head of Engineering
Reports to: Engineering & Performance Director
Role Overview: The Head of Engineering will be based in the UK or Ireland and lead all engineering functions across the Infrastructure Products businesses within Europe. This role is responsible for driving engineering excellence through managing and optimizing engineering projects and value, testing and compliance, manufacturing engineering, capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects, machine automation, and lean transformation initiatives. The role is pivotal in ensuring that engineering processes are aligned with business objectives, operational efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance across all sites across the Group and in line with CRH standards.
Key Accountabilities:
* Lead the evaluation, implementation, and integration of new automation technologies, ensuring alignment with business goals and scalability.
* Drive continuous improvement in engineering operations through lean manufacturing, automation, and other efficiency initiatives.
* Deliver value engineering initiatives via Design for Manufacturing that improves product quality, reduces costs, and enhance manufacturing processes.
* Develop and implement strategies for operational excellence across all manufacturing sites.
* Custodian of the implementation and embedding of new processes and products into Epicor including bill of operations, bill of materials and part and process meta data.
* Develop and automate KPI’s in systems and equipment
* Collaborate with production teams to ensure the smooth transition of new product introductions.
* Provide strategic and technical leadership for the company’s engineering operations across IPE
* Build and mentor a high-performing team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
* Foster cross-functional collaboration with production, quality, procurement, and supply chain teams to ensure engineering solutions align with business goals.
* Ensure optimal allocation of resources and effective project scheduling to meet both short and long-term business objectives.
* Lead the evaluation, selection, and deployment of new machinery, technologies, and production methods.
* Provide clear goals and KPIs, regularly reviewing performance and providing feedback.
* Ensure staff development through training, coaching, and succession planning, ensuring the team has the skills and knowledge required to meet current and future challenges.
* Work with the SHEQ team to ensure products and processes meet all regulatory and safety standards across global and local compliance requirements.
* Develop the standards and procedures for consistent delivery within Engineering.
* Manage the engineering capital expenditure budget, ensuring that investments in new technologies, machinery, and infrastructure support strategic business goals.
* Ensure testing protocols and validation procedures to guarantee that all equipment and systems meet industry certifications and are reliable and fit for purpose.
* Champion lean manufacturing principles, including Six Sigma, Kaizen, and other methodologies to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and enhance operational performance.
* Oversee audits and compliance reviews, addressing any findings with robust action plans.
Experience and Training:
* Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related field); a master’s degree or MBA is a plus.
* Proven experience in a senior engineering leadership role in a multi jurisdiction manufacturing environment.
* Strong track record of leading engineering projects, CAPEX management, and implementing lean manufacturing and automation initiatives.
* Black Belt or MBB experience in lean methodologies (Six Sigma certification preferred) and experience driving continuous improvement initiatives.
* Proven track record in value engineering, manufacturing engineering, testing, and compliance processes.
* Excellent leadership and project management skills, with the ability to manage cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
* Excellent planning and organisational skills, with experience delivering exceptional results on high value projects
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
