SPECIALTY DOCTOR in General Surgery

The role will be key in the Trust transitioning from elective recovery to transformation, as we look to deliver on the exciting overarching surgical strategy for Barts Health. The post will also play a pivotal role in the delivery of the emergency General Surgery strategy across Barts Health, which will have a positive impact for emergency surgical patients across North-East London. We are therefore looking for someone with proven leadership experience and a track-record of delivering high quality care alongside organisational change.
The operating sessions will be based at Newham University Hospital and these sessions will be centred around delivery of high-volume low complexity day case surgery, focusing on developing a world class hernia service.
At Newham, we are committed to developing our workforce, and would provide this postholder with access to accredited leadership development courses that are run by the Kings Fund and Bayes Business school.
The post-holder will be required to work at different Barts Health sites, particularly once the delivery of the emergency General Surgery strategy has been achieved. Subsequently, the job plan will change to reflect this.
You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder is required to have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council. Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of the medical defence organisations.
1. To share the running of the Barts Health General Surgery Service at NUH including in-patient and out-patient practice.
2. To undertake weekly outpatient clinics, operating sessions and pre/post-operative ward rounds.
3. To participate in the general surgery weekend on-call rota.
4. To participate fully as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the General surgical specialty.
5. To deputise for and provide cover for leave for the other consultants as appropriate.
6. To assist in the development and evaluation of new procedures and keep appropriate records of data obtained, in accordance with the requirements of the ethics committee and the data protection act.
7. To help develop the emergency surgery department.
