About this client/child: Ethan has recently turned 4 and is a wonderfully chatty boy who likes to use complex language to talk about his favourite interests - including bows and arrows, bells and rockets. He is also fascinated by complex machinery and how things work and loves learning about new topics! Ethan is very active and always on the go, but despite his need to move, he will sit still for a good story. He also loves taking on a persona and playing out scenarios as his favourite characters. Ethan has been diagnosed with Level 1 autism, he has low proprioception, which means he often seeks physical interaction—such as jumping, climbing, and bumping into others. When frustrated or denied something he wants, he can struggle with emotional regulation and needs support to understand his feelings and guidance with social interactions. He loves adult interaction but struggles more when it comes to engaging with children of his own age. Ethan finds different food textures difficult to try and as a result has a restricted diet. The family are exploring this with a dietician in the coming weeks.
Overview of role: We are looking for a fun, engaging and active SEN Nanny / Manny whobrings with them experience and strategies when it comes to the world of autism. Mum and Dad are very receptive to new ideas and eager to learn from other professionals. Ethan attends a mainstream nursery Monday to Thursday so this is where your shift will begin. In the first few weeks you will likely spend around an hour with Ethan at the nursery, interacting with him and ensuring there is a full handover from nursery staff. Together you will head home, perhaps stopping off at a local park as a very active boy, Ethan benefits from spending time in outdoor space. Once home, this is a great opportunity for more free play and encouraging 1:1 conversation where you can role model appropriate behaviour and social interactions. The family have recently begun introducing the zones of regulation, so this is something to continue working on. You will prepare Ethan’s tea for around 5:30pm. For candidates who drive there is free parking available
Who this job would suit: This is a lovely part-time job for someone with hands-on autism experience. Perhaps you are a Psychology/therapy student or are currently in between your studies looking for some practical hands-on work. The successful candidate will be calm, nurturing, bubbly, fun, but equally someone who can also set and maintain boundaries.
What’s great about this job: Ethan is without a doubt the biggest selling point for this role! He is very engaging and receptive and with the right support and guidance he will really flourish. Both of his parents are eager to understand the best ways to support their son and would welcome input into his ongoing development. There may also be the opportunity to help with regular OT work.
