Job Summary
Supervise the staff in the Non-Gynaecological Cytology preparation laboratory.
Perform Non-Gynaecological preparation room duties at St Peter's Hospital.
Assist in the provision of an efficient service to all users of the Cytopathology Department.
Maintain equipment and keep records in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
Main duties of the job
1. Be familiar with the departmental LIMS (laboratory Information management system).
2. Allocate each sample and request form a unique laboratory number.
3. Record specimen descriptions and clinical details before preparation and choose appropriate preparation methodologies based on them.
4. Preparation of non-gynaecological samples manually using complex semi-automated equipment (Hologic T2000).
5. Use material safety data sheet and COSH risk assessment to ensure that the risks involved in the use of hazardous substances are minimised.
6. Ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures are followed by all preparation laboratory staff.
7. Accept stock deliveries and ensure items and quantities are correct.
8. Maintain and clean machines and instruments used in the NG preparation laboratory within the scope of the SOP.
9. Ensure the correct use of disinfectants and detergents according to COSH regulations and laboratory protocols.
10. Ensure that other routine laboratory tasks, such as slide filing, are kept up to date to assist in archive material retrieval.
11. Supervise the staff in the Non-Gynaecological Cytology preparation laboratory.
12. Supervise the preparation laboratories staff in their duties ensuring that working hours are adhered to and that workflow in the laboratories is timely and efficient.
13. Train new members of Cytology support staff during their training period, and act as a point of contact with the Cytology management team.

Job responsibilities
1. Be familiar with the departmental LIMS (laboratory Information management system).
2. Allocate each sample and request form a unique laboratory number.
3. Check the identity of the patient and specimen details described on the request form for a match with those on the specimen container and either resolve any discrepancies or bring them to the attention of the laboratory management team.
4. Record specimen descriptions and clinical details before preparation and choose appropriate preparation methodologies based on them.
5. Preparation of non-gynaecological samples manually using complex semi-automated equipment (Hologic T2000).
6. Preparation of non-gynaecological specimens for microscopic examination including the handling of potential high risk samples in a microbiological safety cabinet whilst wearing appropriate PPE plus the use and programming of centrifuges prior to staining of prepared slides.
7. Use material safety data sheet and COSH risk assessment to ensure that the risks involved in the use of hazardous substances are minimised.
8. Stain slides using automated instruments.
9. Mount stained microscope slides manually and using an automated cover slipping machine.
10. Ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures are followed by all preparation laboratory staff.
11. Check and maintain stock levels and advise a senior member of staff when these fall below specified levels.
12. Accept stock deliveries and ensure items and quantities are correct.
13. Ensure that resources are used efficiently with regard to storage condition and stock expiry dates.
14. Maintain and clean machines and instruments used in the NG preparation laboratory within the scope of the SOP.
15. Ensure the correct use of disinfectants and detergents according to COSH regulations and laboratory protocols.
16. Ensure that other routine laboratory tasks, such as slide filing, are kept up to date to assist in archive material retrieval.
17. Answer telephone enquiries in accordance with laboratory protocol to provide an effective and user-friendly service.
18. Supervise the staff in the Non-Gynaecological Cytology preparation laboratory.
19. Work closely with the NG Cytology team, lead in the planning and organisation of staffing and rotas.
20. Supervise the preparation laboratories staff in their duties ensuring that working hours are adhered to and that workflow in the laboratories is timely and efficient.
21. Train new members of Cytology support staff during their training period, and act as a point of contact with the Cytology management team.
Person Specification
Essential
* Good education to NVQ level 4.
* IBMS certificate of achievement (Part 2) or foundation degree. Alternatively, education to A level standard preferably including a science subject plus knowledge and experience of relevant specialist science/laboratory procedures or equivalent level knowledge and skill by training and experience in a laboratory.
* Knowledge and experience of relevant specialist laboratory procedures.
* Experience and knowledge of routine non-gynae processing techniques.
Desirable
* Experience & knowledge required to train and supervise less experienced staff.
* Good Team Member.
