Location: Nymans Garden, Handcross, Haywards Heath, RH17 6EB
Contract Type: Permanent / Full-time
Reference/IRC: IRC161385
Closing Date: 6th April 2025
Salary: £26,793 pa
As a Ranger, you’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.
This role is required to work with vulnerable groups including children and any offer of employment or volunteering is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.
What it's like
You’ll be based at Nymans and your work will span across both of these sites in addition to Wych Cross and Selsfield Common.
Collaboration is key, whether working with the garden team to make use of coppice products, with the visitor experience team to develop new and interesting events in nature, or working with the volunteering team to make sure we maintain a fulfilled, involved and well-trained volunteer team.
This is a great role to build on your experience and develop solid foundations for a career in wildlife conservation and countryside management.
What you'll be doing
You’ll lead the day-to-day management of a team of volunteers working throughout the portfolio: following guidance from the Lead Ranger, together you’ll build and manage an effective and flexible work programme.
You’ll support your fellow rangers in undertaking engagement and conservation work and conduct ecological monitoring to assess the impact of our work on the habitats we care for.
You'll assist Forest School Sessions within the woodland, enriching the experience for the next generation of nature enthusiasts! You’ll build relationships in the local community, passing on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.
You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard.
Who we're looking for
* Experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
* Happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
* Hard-working and willing to learn
* Able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
* Experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
* Able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
* Driver with a full UK driving licence
