Furnace Operative
Shifts:
Afternoon Shifts (12pm-8pm)
Direct Report:
Melting Supervisor, Foundry Supervisor, Works Manager
Job Description:
1. Possess proven knowledge of operating induction furnaces and ancillary equipment.
2. Fully comprehend and adhere to prescribed procedures for the safe operation of induction melting plant across two manufacturing plants.
3. Trained individual who is fully aware of all controls and operating instructions.
4. Melting iron, steel, or ferrous constituents to meet the demand of the moulding lines.
5. Following critical procedures and inspection methods to help maintain safety, quality, and productivity.
6. Loading/charging, accurately weighing charge materials for the melting plant.
7. Inspecting charge components to ensure safe conditions and predictable quality.
8. Experience to inspect tools and equipment and perform remedial refractory maintenance to the furnace linings, treatment, and pouring vessels.
9. Ability and experience to pour or cast moulds and treatment of ductile iron in a foundry environment.
10. Supports all aspects of metallurgical testing to ensure safety and quality are always maintained.
11. Practical experience using temperature, chemical, and metallurgical process control tools and equipment.

Specific Key Accountable Duties:
1. To keep everyone safe.
2. To ensure foundry plant is always operated safely and efficiently, minimizing all waste types.
3. Perform frit melts, cold starts, and adhere to shutdown procedures.
4. Maintain a culture of continuous improvement of metallurgical quality and process robustness ensuring customer quality satisfaction.
5. Proactive, driven, development and implementation of process improvement and optimisation of melting, metallurgical process control, and pouring practices.
6. Maintain effective melting records and cast plans for work flow booking and analysis of scrap to production, engineering, and the laboratory to provide the basis for quality improvement and cost reduction.
7. To support lean manufacturing throughout the site.
General Key Accountable Duties:
1. Follow prescribed charge recipes/charge materials/quality of incoming materials to ensure optimised cost and continuity of supply and plant availability.
2. Maintain application of all refractories used in melting and pouring.
3. Maintain levels of inventory and raw materials associated with melting and pouring.
4. Report writing and generating, collating information for customer certification.
5. Participate in plant trials and improvements; maintain departmental communication boards and control charts.
6. Recommend projects to improve business performance.
7. Contribute towards reducing internal and external scrap rates.
8. When required, attend daily scrap meetings to review melting, metallurgical and pour-related defects and implement corrective actions.
9. Ensure all AM checks are completed within melting and metallurgical departments.
10. Ensure permit to work for all non-routine activities for all contractors working within melting, pouring, and testing areas.
11. Work with H&S advisor to improve health and safety/environmental compliance.
12. Plan daily workload of team with relevant managers and supervisors.
13. Ensure all metallurgical and process control equipment is maintained in expected working condition and calibrated.
14. Ensure all associated departmental materials are clearly marked and stored safely in designated storage areas.
15. Implement FIFO of incoming materials and stock rotation.
16. Raise concerns relating to any suspect or non-conforming material.
Health and Safety:
1. Ensure that company health and safety policy is understood and upheld.
2. Ensure that all personnel are equipped with the required safety equipment, are trained in its correct use, and that the equipment is properly looked after and maintained.
3. Supervise and control subcontractors on site ensuring policy is implemented including review of method statements.
4. Ensure that all accidents are reported and recorded in the accident book.
5. Ensure appropriate permits to work are issued for all non-routine tasks.
6. Develop and actively improve risk assessments for key activities within the department.
7. Report near misses and assist in the debrief of such occurrences.
8. Bring to the attention of the Works Manager any practice that you consider unsafe or illegal anywhere within the company.

2. OHC Crane, lifting and slinging experience
