Job Overview
The Emotional Chat Volunteer, also known as a Certified Listener, will provide emotional support on the online chat platform to chatters who are in distress and emotional. As a Certified Listener, you are not a therapist and do not provide crisis intervention or addiction counselling. Proper training will be provided before taking support chats, and this is an opportunity to gain more life skills.
Responsibilities and Duties
1. Providing immediate and confidential support following agency procedures and policies.
2. Providing early-stage and real-time interventions to callers.
3. Completing weekly shifts and reporting to the Certified Listener coordinator.
4. Collaborating with other volunteers and staff in a respectful and professional manner.
5. Building relationships and having conversations through empathy and emotional support on the online platform.
6. Ongoing training, development, and support from the team.
What will you NOT be doing?
1. Acting as a therapist or holding yourself out to be one.
2. Providing callers with mental health support or services.
3. Telling people what to do or how they should live their lives.
4. Providing crisis intervention or addiction counselling.
Qualifications and Skills
1. Excellent communication skills and computer literacy.
2. Proficiency in the English language, specifically written.
3. Capacity to remain calm and collected in challenging situations.
4. Non-judgmental attitude and acceptance of various values and beliefs.
5. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
6. Access to reliable internet connectivity and a private workspace from home.
7. Adherence to Certified Listeners Society policies, procedures, and online chat guidelines.
Requirements
1. 18+ Years Old.
2. Must have residency in Canada or USA (e.g., Canadian citizenship, PR, work permit, work visa).
3. Two references (professional, academic, or volunteer-related).
4. Police reference check, including vulnerable sector screening.
5. Successful completion of all comprehensive Core Competencies training programs, quizzes, and screening process.
6. Reliability in fulfilling weekly shift commitments.
7. Able to comply with Certified Listeners Society policies and procedures and our Code of Ethics.
8. Maintain a confidential workplace and confidentiality about your work.
9. Sign and comply with our Volunteer Non-Disclosure Agreement.
10. Participate in ongoing training and work relation development opportunities.
