The Laser Processing Team (LPT) are looking for a skilled Advanced Research Engineer to join their team, based in Coventry. Reporting to a Resource Lead, the Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) role will be focused on the technical delivery of surface engineering projects and support the development of project-related activities across the MTC. This will include the Advanced Research Engineer working across various technology departments and industrial sectors.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Largely independent supply of larger project's technical deliverables, and act as Technical Lead for smaller projects, where required.
2. Ensure project work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, within agreed budgets and timescales.
3. Undertake innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+, and able to demonstrate industrial project delivery.
4. Contribute to the identification, technical specification, and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, customers, or industrial members' premises.
5. This role will require involvement in all aspects of the project delivery including but not restricted to: concept generation, detailed design, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, awareness of project budget and deliverables.
Person Specification
Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience
1. Degree calibre scientist, engineer or technologist.
2. Knowledge and demonstrable experience in any or all the following areas: Laser surface engineering and short-pulse laser-matter interactions.
3. Approaches to developing functional surfaces.
4. Experience with laser programming.
5. Approaches to producing textured surfaces.
6. Surface analysis techniques including the measurement of wettability, chemistry, tribology, and physical modifications.
7. Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills are required for the role.
8. Able to demonstrate a high standard of report writing and presentation skills.
9. A desire to support colleagues and transfer knowledge in area of expertise to others in the department, and to wider MTC colleagues.
10. Committed to work collaboratively and network effectively.
11. Pragmatic hands-on experience, providing problem-solving approach and willing to physically participate in completion of work when required.
12. Self-motivated and a self-starter, with the ability to work autonomously to meet deadlines, budgets and quality expectations, both within a team, or independently.
13. Experience working where subsequent adherence to associated process and policy is critical to maintain customer confidentiality.

1. Professional registration or a desire to work towards professional registration.
2. Good knowledge of the UK manufacturing sector.
3. Knowledge or willingness to learn about the application of life cycle analysis.
