What is it that drives someone to hit the apply button on a job listing? Improved remuneration and benefits? Career development? Responsibility? Leadership potential? A balance of challenge vs reward? The prospect of working with a highly respected employer operating in a genuinely exciting industry sector? If you’re a senior finance professional and the answer to one or more of the aforementioned is a yes, we’ve got something special here…
Trial Balance Consulting are delighted to have formed an exclusive recruitment partnership with a new client; a well-established and highly successful e-commerce retailer with big plans for the future. They’ve tasked us with sourcing their next Financial Controller, their onsite finance-number-one and a position of pivotal importance to the company. This is a full time, permanent position to be based from the company’s headquarters on the outskirts of Plymouth but with scope for a hybrid working arrangement if required.
The business: A single sales channel e-commerce business operating in a sustainable and lucrative consumer market, the business is well established (20 years) and employs approximately 80 staff. The business is 100% privately owned with no external investors to satisfy and benefits from a highly experienced senior management team including a non-exec director who previously operated as an FD. Last financial turnover £15M and set to increase moving forwards.
The role:
Working closely with a highly experienced and very personable Managing Director, and supported by a small team, this will be broad and diverse role that will see the successful candidate leading the end-to-end financial function. The current incumbent (leaving the business on excellent terms) has set up highly robust and streamlined systems and processes and the incoming FC will be encouraged to further develop these. Key responsibilities to include:
1. Assume full operational control across all areas of the company’s finance function using Xero
2. Act as the key point of financial contact for key suppliers and external stakeholders
3. Mentor and develop a small team of transactional focused staff
4. Develop robust accounting practices in preparation for continued growth
5. FP&A
6. Production of high quality management reports with commentary
7. Monthly reviews of the P&L and Balance Sheet (adding journal entries where required)
8. Support MD in setting annual budgets and cashflow forecasts
9. VAT reporting and general HMRC statutory compliance
10. Oversee the monthly payroll function
11. Work closely with SMT on a range of ongoing business projects
12. Regularly liaise with accountants and auditors
The person:
We’re looking for a dynamic, energetic, and down-to-earth Financial Controller with a demonstrable history of success. Probably, though not necessarily, a professionally qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA), the successful candidate will be armed with exceptional commercial acumen and sound operational finance skills. This will be a diverse role that would be well suited to a forward thinker possessing the confidence to add significant value. The role would be well suited to both an experienced Financial Controller or an ambitious Finance Manager seeking a step up. You’ll need a solid background in supervising staff, preparation of financial and management reports, up to date knowledge of accounting standards and budgetary controls, excellent IT aptitude, and most certainly a natural leadership style. It’s a big job, but a rewarding one, and well suited to a driven FC who cares about their colleagues as much as their customers.
Curious? We’d like to tell you more and share a well-considered role specification. For further details and to apply, please contact Steve Roach quoting reference SR9699. Timing: Our client is keen to appoint and has requested CVs as quickly as possible. This will be a fluid, no nonsense, two stage process - the blueprint for a painless recruitment project!
