M and P live in a two story home, with an annexe, and lovely gardens to both the front and the rear of the property. Positioned just by the Loughor estuary, there are beautiful local walks, pubs and shops all within walking distance.
M is a 34 year old gentleman with a mild Learning Disability, autism and ADHD, who enjoys physical activities and also relaxing at home. He has a keen interest in old car restoration, so if you are handy with a spanner, all the better! M needs you to be patient and empathic as he needs you to understand that he requires time to process, and make sense of information, and his surroundings. He will also need your gentle encouragement to manage a healthy diet. M has a delightful sense of humour, is known to be mischievous and thrives on making you laugh. M enjoys a very close relationship with his parents. He will be delighted if you share his passion for watching sport and playing the Xbox!
P is a 46 year old gentleman, with Smith-Magenis Syndrome, diabetes, and a hearing impediment and uses both words and signing to communicate with those around him. He very much enjoys his karaoke machine - so if you can hold a tune (or not!!) you will fit in a treat! P prefers to communicate using short sentences, signs and gestures. He is generally happy and sociable and has a very close relationship with his brother. At times, P does need to enjoy the calming solitude of his own company and will communicate this to you if he is feeling the need for some down time.
To become part of M and P's support team, you will need to be able to demonstrate:
- a sound understanding of the complexities of autism, ADHD and anxiety.
- a positive approach to risk taking
- a good understanding of positive behaviour support
- an empathic ability to enable people, who can struggle to regulate their emotions, to feel grounded and secure.
- are willing to undertake Positive Behaviour Management practical & theoretical training
- excellent communication skills; an awareness of how to support a person with a hearing impairment would be ideal
In addition you will:
- enjoy supporting with physical activities such as cycling, walking, trampolining
- have a strong sense of the importance of maintaining relationships with family and friends
- be able to work as part of a large team and follow clear support guidance
- understand, and not take personally, behaviours of distress which may be displayed
- be comfortable to provide intimate personal care respectfully
- have a full UK driving licence, as both M & P have their own vehicles which they ask that you are able to drive
