Chair of Governors - Wiltshire College & University Centre
Are you someone who can lead Wiltshire College and University Centre’s Board with energy, professionalism, and strategic vision, driving progress and championing education?
* Location: Chippenham, Lackham, Trowbridge, Salisbury and Castle Combe
* Salary: Unremunerated with reasonable expenses paid
About the role
We are looking to engage a new Chair to lead our governing body with energy, enthusiasm, professionalism and dedication. Our Board, currently comprising 14 members, collectively monitors the progress and development of the College to ensure we achieve our strategic priorities and deliver what our communities need. The Governing Body is known as the Corporation. Members of the Corporation are mostly external to the college and are local people with a range of skills, knowledge and experience to help the college achieve its strategic objectives.
We will require you to be ambitious for the College and its students, driven by our values – Respectful, Collaborative, and Curious. The Chair will have a responsibility to ensure the Board upholds the educational character of Wiltshire College & University Centre and acts in accordance with our governing documents and sector-specific legal parameters. The Chair will work closely with our Principal & CEO, Iain Hatt, and the Director of Governance, Heather Cross to plan the annual business of the Board. Working in close collaboration with the Committee Chairs and other executive leaders, the Chair will ensure that agendas are effective, and meetings are run efficiently with full engagement and contribution encouraged.
As Chair, you will also have good local knowledge and understanding of the needs and challenges across the communities that we serve, recognising how these may impact the decisions made by the College in engaging and delivering for its students, staff and stakeholders. Working with other Board members and the Executive Team, an important part of the role will be ensuring people in our locality can reach their potential.
Who we're looking for
Our next Chair will possess strong leadership and people skills to unite the whole Board as a cohesive team, work with the Principal & Chief Executive Officer, Iain Hatt, to review the 2022-2027 College Strategy and drive forward the jointly agreed strategic aims to meet our ambition for the future.
You will be an experienced Chair, whether in a formal Board setting or within your working life. You must demonstrate your ability to lead a group of people from different backgrounds and experiences to reach a consensus. You must also have the skills to work with each member individually to bring their different strengths to the fore and create a united Board.
As an experienced strategic leader, we would like to benefit from your connections and influence in the region and encourage you to use your ambassadorial networking abilities to continue building and developing the College’s strong reputation in its region and beyond.
It would be beneficial if you have experience of, or prior exposure to, a non-executive board and can recognise the key differentiators between strategic oversight and operational delivery. You should also have knowledge of corporate governance and how fundamental it is to an organisation’s success and sustainability.
Across all of this, we need our next Chair to have the necessary time to devote to the role. It is so important to us that you have the capacity to take on this public duty and become the next custodian of Wiltshire College & University Centre, benefiting the thousands of students who will study and train with us over the years ahead.
