Job Summary:
The Learning Resource Centre Tutor (ALT) is a critical role aimed at supporting students in their academic journey by providing tutoring, guidance, and access to library resources. This role focuses on student retention, satisfaction, and academic success by offering personalised support, facilitating workshops, and collaborating with various academic teams. The ideal candidate will possess strong support skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for helping students thrive in their studies.
Key Responsibilities:
Tutoring and Academic Support:
* Offer one-on-one and group tutoring sessions across various subjects.
* Assist students in developing research strategies and effective study habits.
* Support students in understanding and utilising library resources, databases, and research tools.
Library Resource Assistance:
* Help students locate and use library materials, including books, journals, and electronic resources.
* Assist with library technologies, such as catalogue systems, databases, and citation tools.
Workshops and Instruction:
* Develop and deliver workshops on research methods, database usage, academic writing, Harvard referencing, Academic study skills and other relevant topics.
* Create and update instructional materials and guides in collaboration with other staff.
Student Engagement and Retention:
* Provide guidance on available academic support services and resources.
* Engage and inspire students to foster a sense of community and belonging.
* Monitor student progress and provide advice on study skills as needed.
* Recognise and address mitigating circumstances and refer students to appropriate support services.
Collaboration and Communication:
* Liaise between students, academic staff, and support teams to ensure comprehensive academic support.
* Participate in the enrolment and induction processes to establish strong initial connections with students.
* Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and student interactions.
Administrative and Additional Duties:
* Assist with administrative tasks such as personal tutoring, examinations, and assessments.
* Participate in professional development to stay updated with the latest academic support strategies and library technologies.
* Ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures, including data protection and equality and diversity guidelines.
Qualifications:
Education:
* Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g, Education, English, Information Technology, Business, Health & Social Care Management or any other related subject).
* Master’s degree on a related field is preferred.
Experience:
* Previous experience in tutoring, academic support, or teaching is highly desirable.
* Familiarity with library systems, databases, academic study skills and research tools.
Skills:
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
* Proficiency in using library catalogue systems, databases, and reference management software.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
* Strong commitment to student success and academic integrity.
Working Conditions:
Primarily works in a library setting including evening and weekend hours to accommodate student schedules and library programs.
