Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support for Year 2 Student)
Location:

Start Date:
ASAP
We are looking for a patient and experienced Child Support Specialist to provide 1:1 support for a Year 2 boy with behavioural and emotional challenges. The role involves working closely with the child, who can become physically dysregulated, sometimes throwing objects when distressed. As part of the school’s wider nurture team, you will focus on providing direct support while also assisting in other areas as needed.
This child has Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), so it's essential to use the right language and approaches to avoid escalation. Communication is key in this role, as the boy responds best to clear, supportive language.
The boy has a love for animals, and incorporating this into his support plan may be beneficial. Since returning to school, he has struggled with dysregulation and requires extra help to settle back into routines. If you are passionate about helping children navigate their challenges, this role could be a great fit!
Key Responsibilities:
Provide 1:1 support to help the child manage challenging behaviours, including physical outbursts, using de-escalation and calming strategies.
Use appropriate language and communication techniques tailored to the child's PDA profile, avoiding direct demands to reduce frustration or defiance.
Assist the child in regulating emotions and settling into daily routines, offering patient guidance and positive reinforcement.
Work as part of the school’s nurture team, supporting the child primarily but stepping in to help with other children or tasks as required.
Maintain open communication with school staff, ensuring the child's progress and challenges are regularly shared and discussed.
Essential Requirements:
Experience working with children with emotional and behavioral needs.
Knowledge of behavior management techniques, including de-escalation and sensory support.
A calm, nurturing approach and the ability to stay composed in challenging situations.
Understanding of mental health challenges in children, including trauma-informed approaches.
A DBS check registered on the update service or willingness to obtain one.
A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach, with the ability to build strong relationships.
Strong communication and teamwork skills, working closely with staff to support the child’s individual needs.
Understanding of safeguarding and confidentiality policies.
This is a unique opportunity to provide life-changing support in a child’s educational journey. If you are dedicated to helping children overcome challenges and thrive, we’d love to hear from you!
