Collections Assistant - York
Summary
We protect everything from bats to buildings to beaches - and we want to share them with everyone too. But how do we care for our special places, while helping everyone to enjoy them and their fascinating stories? It's no small task. In fact, it's a big team effort and it's why our Collections Assistants are so important.
What it's like to work here
Reporting to the Collections & House Manager, you'll be part of a team of six staff at Beningbrough. You'll also work with our team of Collections volunteers. Your role will also involve some occasional work across the York portfolio at Treasurer's House and Goddards, where needed. You'll work closely with the Visitor Experience team and also have involvement with elements of our exhibitions programme. There will be the opportunity to attend training in preventive conservation, collections management and volunteer management.
From the teenager who inherited it, to its time as an RAF billet, Beningbrough was shaped for more than 300 years by the people who lived here. The architecture and collections on the ground floor tell the story of a country house, while the Reddihough Galleries on the first floor host changing exhibitions of contemporary and traditional artwork.
Beningbrough is undergoing an exciting period of change, with a re-display of the ground floor planned for the coming years, and an ambitious scheme of development in progress in the gardens. As part of the York portfolio, our Collections Assistants are vital in caring for the hall and its collection.
What you'll be doing
As a Collections Assistant, you'll be working with a great Collections & House team in an incredible place, helping with the day-to-day cleaning and care of the collections. No detail will go unnoticed and you'll keep a keen eye on everything from the environmental conditions in a room, to signs of wear and tear. You'll keep accurate records, too.
In this visitor-facing role, we'd love you to talk to visitors about the work you're doing, and the collections we have. You'll also be part of the wider team of Collections Assistants and volunteers, helping to cover where necessary.
You can view the full role profile in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what's possible in this role.
