Job Introduction BBC Scotland News is the nation's leading news service on television, radio, online, and social media. We are looking for online journalists who are passionate about Scottish news and who would like to be join our busy newsroom in the impressive Pacific Quay building in Glasgow. We are putting the audience even more firmly at the heart of everything we do. You will have access to immediate audience feedback on stories from our insight software and social media platforms. This will help you hone and improve your journalism skills, while developing a rich understanding of audience preferences and behaviours. We combine breaking and developing news with accessible analysis and explanation of events. One day you might be involved with on-the-day news and speaking to contributors, sourcing video and identifying good social media posts, and another day you might be working out creative angles for digital videos. We want to tell the high-quality stories that really matter to audiences across Scotland. There will sometimes be opportunities to get out the office to work on your own ideas - perhaps looking at how a local community is affected by a social issue, or focusing on someone connected to a story in the news. Your best stories could end up being seen by anything from one to three million people. We are a hard-working team consisting of people with a wide range of ages, from diverse backgrounds, and living in Glasgow and the surrounding towns and villages within commuting distance. This role may involve varied working hours including day shifts, early shifts (6am start) and late shifts (11pm finish) and some weekends. Main Responsibilities We are looking for a journalist to be part of our digital video and social media team in heart of the newsroom. You will take part in managing the main BBC Scotland News social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, while maintaining high editorial standards. During breaking news situations, under the guidance of editors, you will help source information from social media, including pictures, videos and contributors. You will also edit breaking news clips with pace and accuracy. You will also cut and edit and shoot videos that have great opening shots and words that will grab the audience's attention on social media. These videos will explain things in a fast-paced and engaging way, and sometimes with the use of graphics. You will also work with reporters and correspondents to help them reach a wide audience with their stories, using your audience and social media knowledge. You will work with their rushes and find ways to cut a digital video that works for online and social media. Are you the right candidate? We are looking for a journalist who is enthusiastic about engaging audiences in the news, and who has an aptitude for technical skills. You should have sound editorial judgement when developing story ideas. Producing accurate and impartial journalism is essential. You will be a team-player who enjoys working with others and can tell complex stories in an engaging way. You will have resilience and determination in getting to the core of stories or finding contributors. You should have video production skills and filming and editing experience. You should have a strong understanding of the Scottish news agenda and how we engage our audiences to turn to BBC News Scotland for their content. This role may involve working shifts including weekends, early and late shifts.
