Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to become part of a friendly team of ward clerks based within the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU). The successful applicant will be asked to work within the SEU Triage assessment area, where 24/7 ward clerk cover is provided. The post holder will work day and night shifts, weekdays and weekends, as part of the administration team to ensure the smooth running of SEU Triage. The post holder will provide excellent customer care that demonstrates a caring and responsive approach to those attending the hospital, accurately record and input data into the Trust's EPR system in a timely manner, and file departmental records containing sensitive patient information while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
You should enjoy communicating with a wide range of people, be highly organised, and have a flexible approach to work. Attention to detail and good keyboarding skills are essential.

Job responsibilities
The overall purpose of this role is to provide a high quality, comprehensive and professional administration service in support of the clinical activities undertaken on the Surgical Emergency Unit.
Main responsibilities
1. Responsible for the reception of patients, relatives, and carers in a calm, professional, and polite manner.
2. Provide excellent customer care that demonstrates a caring and responsive approach to those attending the hospital.
3. Use tact, diplomacy, understanding, and compassion when communicating with patients and visitors who may be distressed.
4. Answer telephone calls from referring doctors regarding the admission or transfer of patients to the SEU and ensure effective communication with the on-take clinical team.
5. Collect personal and confidential information from patients or relatives to complete the admissions process.
6. Accurately record and input information into the Trust's EPR system in a timely manner.
7. Collect and accurately input information into the SEU database.
8. Complete the admissions process within SEU Triage, printing labels and wristbands for all patients.
9. Scan patient documentation into correct patient records in EPR in accordance with Trust guidelines.
10. Ensure the tracking and requesting of medical notes for SEU patients.
11. File departmental records and organise the culling of filed notes in accordance with Trust guidelines.
12. Ensure that information on overseas patients is entered accurately onto EPR to ensure appropriate charges are incurred.
13. Photocopy and perform other general office procedures.
14. Deal with general enquiries to the unit regarding patients, both internally and from external agencies.
15. Work as part of the combined SEU team, providing administration cover during peak workload or staff shortages.
16. Understand own role and involvement in a Major Incident.
17. Contribute to personal development through attendance at mandatory training and annual appraisal.
18. Participate in the induction and training of new members of staff within the team.
Person Specification
Shortlisting criteria
1. Good general level of education, GCSE or equivalent in English.
2. NHS experience or experience in a customer service environment.
3. Analytical and judgement skills.
4. Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
5. Excellent keyboard skills.
6. Ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines.
7. Ability to work effectively under pressure.
8. Able to work without supervision.
9. Willingness to attend further training as required.
10. Flexibility in approach to work and the changing needs of the service.
11. Recognised IT qualification.
