Role This apprenticeship opportunity is an ideal starting point for those who wish to start a career in the Higher Education science sector, during which time you will work within a fast paced, busy environment, developing a full understanding of how technical services within the two Departments operate, working the majority of your time in the undergraduate teaching laboratories with opportunities to experience activities in a wide range of research facilities. Key Responsibilities: Carry out routine tasks in teaching laboratories to deliver Chemistry/Environment & Geography undergraduate teaching. Seek advice and direction of more senior staff, to achieve outcomes in non-standard situations. Operate basic scientific equipment. Apply knowledge to solve routine problems and use initiative. Assist other technicians in the work area with the preparation of equipment and supply of consumables for teaching activities. Maintain a clean and safe working environment, including the correct disposal of waste. Understand, promote and apply relevant COSHH and health and safety protocols ensuring procedures are followed at all times. Maintain accurate records of work undertaken, using appropriate IT software. Assist with general administrative tasks associated with the operation of the work area. Assist with purchasing including ordering and distributing goods. Work effectively with others and assist with induction of students and staff to the work area. To contribute and support change in the work area. To actively demonstrate a commitment to professional development by continuing to advance knowledge, understanding and competencies. Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed An adaptable attitude; being willing to jump into new tasks is essential. A keen eye for detail and problem solving. A strong team player and confident communicator. A dependable, enthusiastic, positive and proactive approach. A genuine passion for science and education and interest in technical services and laboratory work. An eagerness to learn and develop new skills GCSEs (or equivalent qualifications or experience) in Science, Maths and English. No experience needed, but practical experience (i.e. through school projects, hobbies, or volunteering) and an understanding of basic health and safety practices, including COSHH, and familiarity with IT tools like Google Apps, Excel, and Word would be beneficial.
