With Instructors with over 30 years of experience working within the Port Industry, you will be trained to a high standard to enable you to operate safely with a comprehensive understanding of your duties and responsibilities. The positions are for one of the most diverse and dynamic container terminals in the UK. A key part of container handling is managing the movements of the shipping containers within the port. Operatives are needed to cope with current business expansion and that’s where HDS Terminal Operatives come in. The role begins with general duties: Berth Cleaning, Devanning, Packing and a range of duties requested by the site management and supervisors. Once trained, duties will move forward to: Mooring, deck work and Straddle Carrier training. The role will develop through training into becoming a trained Terminal Operative which will include six weeks of one-to-one training on driving your machine and general port operations including deck duties and mooring with our RTITB trainers. After passing this course you will be given full responsibility to work alongside the team on the terminal. Key skills and opportunities to be included in the role: Maintaining health & safety practices to a high standard. Safely operating a 70 Tonne Container Handling Straddle Carrier (this involves working at height). Identifying and moving containers to and from vessels, trucks and trains. Distributing shipping containers throughout our storage yards. Refuelling of vehicles. Use of radios to communicate with colleagues and the control team/operations. Safe standards of manual handling. To be considered you must meet the following criteria: A ge over 18 with a full UK Driving Licence. Ability to work comfortably at height and around water. Ability to speak and understand written English in a confident manner, to ensure that safety and standards are maintained. Experience of working in ports or with plant is preferred but not necessary. Flexible approach to working patterns. A good level of physical fitness. Willingness to work unsociable hours. Hours: Monday to Friday Weekends Nights Days Lates Earlies Availability of 8, 10 and 12 hour shifts Pay & Holiday: Standard pay: £11.44 p/h increasing once fully trained. 28 days paid annual leave. Closed bank holidays. Important Information: It is important to note that HDS has a zero-tolerance policy to drugs misuse. You will be required to undergo a drug test during the recruitment process in order to continue. Please also note you will be subjected to random drug and alcohol tests throughout your employment, as per company policy. You will also be required to undergo a company medical, which is then completed biannually. A height test and strength test is required as part of the selection process.
