Consultant – Product Design Engineer, London
Summary
Leveraging your creativity, expertise and enthusiasm for design and engineering, you will collaborate with our team to develop technically challenging and innovative products from early ideas to production.
You will be confident in balancing technical functionality with usability and aesthetics, have an appreciation of engineering science and mechanics as well as an understanding of manufacture and materials. Excellent technical hand sketching skills are required, along with a good initial understanding of CAD (Solidworks).
Having recently graduated or with some initial experience working in the industry (0-3 years), PDD would look to help you grow, developing your skillset so that eventually you can manage sections of projects alongside senior staff members.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
* Create and sketch inventive, appropriate and practical technical concepts and assess their feasibility
* Research, source and specify applicable technologies, suppliers, materials and processes
* Develop concepts into reliable and robust solutions; including 3D CAD modelling, overseeing the production of prototypes and conducting testing
* Balance the inputs from human sciences, industrial design and mechanical engineers to deliver appropriate and meaningful design solutions
* Detail and specify design for manufacture; including engineering drawings, tolerances and specifications with oversight and support from senior team members
* Create and control documents including presentations, reports and schedules
* Communicate and present work to clients
* Operate within the PDD quality system and wider regulatory framework
* Interpret briefs, prepare proposals, plans and requirements specifications
* Manage project time and cost, lead and co-ordinate the team and liaise with clients and subcontractors
Requirements
We are looking for a talented and dynamic individual with the broad design, communication and self-management qualities leading to innovative solutions and excellent client relations.
Minimum requirements include:
* 1st or 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in Product Design Engineering or equivalent
* Excellent hand sketching ability (to convey technical concepts)
* Proficient in 3D CAD modelling (Solidworks) with good surfacing knowledge and ability
* Familiar with materials and processes for injection moulding, casting, machining and fabrication
* Excellent written and verbal presentation skills
Ideally you also have experience in the following areas:
* Application of first principle engineering calculation to inform design decisions
* Workshop skills and the ability to quickly mock-up and test ideas
