The successful candidate will be expected to manage the day to day running of the Critical Care Department. They will need to prioritise and ensure the delivery of safe effective nursing care to critically ill patients and their families. They must also provide support to the nursing team by utilising excellent leadership and management skills, demonstrating effective clinical skills and competence, and communicating effectively.

Main duties of the job
* Support the Critical Care Matron to provide effective clinical leadership and management within the Critical Care Department.
* Be a visible leader and lead a motivated and valued nursing team.
* Coordinate the operational management of the Critical Care Department.
* Hold professional accountability within the Critical Care Department.
* In line with national guidelines participate in the development and management of the Critical Care service.
* Assist the Matron in implementing and coordinating systems within the framework of clinical governance and patient safety.
* Ensure and provide high standards of safe quality care to patients within Critical Care.
* Continually improve patient experience.
* In accordance with the NMC standards, promote, and always demonstrate professionalism and ICORE Values.
* Provide effective management of the nursing team ensuring safe staffing and effective human resource management of the team.
* Be a clinical specialist within the Critical Care Department, and provide clinical management, advice, support, teaching and learning opportunities to all relevant personnel within the department, to ensure excellence in practice, and deliver safe patient care.

Job responsibilities
* Provide effective leadership and management of the Critical Care team.

* Initiate required audits at departmental level and support the completion of focused regional benchmarking.
* Proactively manage all aspects of clinical risk, monitoring trends, and taking action to improve patient safety.
* Work towards achieving the Queen Elizabeth Hospitals NHS Trust objectives as laid out in the Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.
* Ensure that accurate records and information systems are maintained and that all staff are trained in the use of relevant IT Systems.
* In collaboration with the Educational Facilitator ensure compliance to mandatory training and medical device requirements.
* Ensure the safe control and custody of all drugs within the Critical Care setting.

* Establish and develop effective communication with all disciplines, patients, and relatives, presenting complex, sensitive, and sometimes contentious information using highly developed interpersonal communication skills.

* In collaboration with the Educational Facilitator, contribute to a positive learning environment to support all staff involved in the delivery of Critical Care nursing care.

* Provide specialist, technical and clinical advice to patients and members of a multidisciplinary team.
