LGC’s National Laboratories deliver a range of expert science functions and services in partnership with the UK Government, business, healthcare, and academia. We manage and operate several national laboratories on behalf of government agencies, such as the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML), MHRA Laboratories Team and National Reference Laboratories, as well as hosting the unique function of the ‘Government Chemist’.

In regards to the location of the role, you will initially be based at the Teddington site. However, the Company is planning to permanently relocate its National Laboratories, Teddington operations to The Priestley Centre, Surrey Research Park, Guildford around Autumn 2024. Job Description
The Office of Reference Materials (ORM) works in accordance with internationally agreed best practise and has ISO 17034 accreditation in place for the production of a wide range of reference materials. It works closely with the analytical teams in the NML and with laboratories across the world to ensure the production of high-quality materials. The ORM has a portfolio of over a hundred and twenty reference materials and certified reference materials. Their products support measurements over a range of sectors including food, environment and clinical. The team is currently working on 15 – 20 projects, some of which will result in new materials and others are replacement materials for those which are close to selling out.
The job holder will work closely with the Senior Project Manager, other members of the ORM team, and LGC’s statisticians to support the production and maintenance of high-quality reference materials. Please note this is primarily an office-based role.
Key Responsibilities
1. Arranging production of reference materials to an agreed specification under supervision
2. Liaison with subcontractors including laboratories, internal and external, to ensure the required analyses are delivered to specification
3. Collating and evaluating data in partnership with the LGC statisticians
4. Maintenance of accurate records
5. Presentation of results and attendance at planning and certification panels, as required
6. Drafting reference material certificates and reports
7. Occasional bottling and labelling of NML reference materials
8. Assisting with ad hoc reference material related activities providing support for the team
9. Adhering to quality systems and UKAS accreditation requirements
Qualifications
Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills
10. Degree or equivalent in chemistry
11. Self-reliant and self-motivated, but team player with excellent attention to detail
12. Good organisation and communication skills, both oral and written
13. An appreciation of the importance of working within a quality system and knowledge of good laboratory practice
14. Ability to deliver work within timescale & budget
15. Methodical approach to work
16. IT literate. Confident user of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, email and the Internet for information searches.
17. Aptitude for multi-activity working
