In the world of energy, no area is more exciting than large-scale energy storage. From a few installations a decade ago to a market Barclays Bank says is “likely to approach the trillions,” energy storage makes wind and solar available around the clock. Invinity is taking a leading role by providing a safe, reliable, and economical alternative to conventional storage solutions.
Invinity Energy Systems, a public company trading on the London Stock Exchange, produces batteries that do not suffer the short life, fire risk and materials scarcity that hold back solutions powered by lithium-ion batteries. Invinity’s flow batteries store energy in a water-based electrolyte using vanadium, a widely available element proven in energy storage for decades. Invinity has commercial projects in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, with significant operations in Bathgate and Vancouver and offices in London and San Francisco.
We are looking for people with a passion for renewable energy to join us. People love working at Invinity because we are empowered to make a meaningful impact. We’re small enough that every team member plays a critical role in our daily business, but large enough that the batteries we build are being deployed at significant scale in landmark clean energy projects around the world.
Invinity is committed to providing equal opportunities in the workplace and follows a comprehensive Equal Opportunities Policy to ensure all employees are valued and can reach their full potential.
Invinity is seeking an experienced R&D Mechatronic Engineer to join its technology development team in Bathgate. In this role, you will work with an international, collaborative team to characterise and improve materials for the vanadium redox flow battery. You will be responsible for developing new devices as well as maintaining, calibrating, and improving test equipment. To test a flow cell, both fluidic and electrical control and measurement are needed. This job offers plenty of variety and a chance to explore creative solutions.
Responsibilities
* Design, development and construction of novel custom test apparatus
* Modification and improvement of existing test equipment
* Maintenance, calibration and testing of equipment
* Clear and consistent documentation and reporting of test equipment, methods and procedures
* Specification and acquisition (together with our purchasing department) of new equipment and services, including sourcing and liaison with external service providers
* Identification of means to improve testing capabilities (e.g., transitioning from manual to automated measurements)
Requirements
* We are searching for a mechatronic engineer, where formal qualifications are less important than clear demonstration of as many of the following technical skills as possible:
o Mechanical 2D and 3D design and use of simple CNC milling machines for lab hardware and fixtures
o Electronic equipment integration and calibration, including bidirectional AC/DC power supplies varying between 10 W and 10 kW range
o Automated data collection from test equipment
o Software programming to control test equipment and acquire data in a suitable format for further analysis
o Familiarity with all aspects of fluid (liquids and gases) metrology: flow, pressure and temperature measurements
o Familiarity with hardware such as pumps, control valves, etc.
* At least 5 years demonstrated experience with the build, calibration, and maintenance of similar custom test devices and data acquisition systems
* Awareness of safety in a laboratory/production environment (electrical, chemical and mechanical safety aspects)
* Exceptional organizational, execution, and problem-solving skills
* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate complex technology issues in a clear, concise manner
* Experience in the fuel cell or electrochemical industry would be advantageous
