Job overview
We are seeking candidates who have full GMC registration and a CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or are within six months of completion of training, or eligible for Specialist Registration at the time of interview.
This is an exciting time to join the Acute Care Directorate. The primary role will be as the Consultant Psychiatrist providing senior medical input to George Ward which is a 16-bedded male inpatient unit.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will be responsible for inpatients and those on clinical leave. The length of stay is currently 28 days. The clinical leadership team is engaged in local work and supports the national GIRFT team (getting it right first time) in optimizing criteria for admission, treatment, discharge, and overall length of stay.
The Directorate has embarked on a series of workstreams that have seen the innovation of new roles across the inpatient staffing model and there is a programme of work to support the clinical approach both on acute wards and on PICU units around restrictive practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will work with the ward manager, the psychologist, the matron, and the occupational therapist as part of a broad-based leadership team to improve the care of patients. The post holder will provide medical leadership and input to the multidisciplinary ward team with attendance at daily inpatient reviews that include multidisciplinary review meetings, bed management meetings, and discharge planning reviews.
Person specification
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
* Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
* MRCPsych or equivalent
* Obtained inclusion on the Specialist Register; or within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in General Adult Psychiatry; or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register
* Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development
* Substantial experience of psychiatry, including working with people suffering from severe mental illness, preferably in a range of secure and non-secure settings
* Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
* Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level
* Commitment to clinical audit within a multi-disciplinary team.
* Evidence of potential for effective leadership.
* Ability to work creatively within multidisciplinary
* Demonstrable interest in the provision of gender-sensitive mental health service
* Willingness to be involved in management of service.
* Able to participate in Consultant on-call rota.
* Able to travel
* Additional qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or another relevant field
* Broad clinical training including both inpatient and community service
* Experience serving a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic population.
* Experience of stakeholder engagement in service delivery
* Experience of contributing to or completion of a service improvement project
* Completed clinically relevant audit projects
