Bioinformatics Software Engineer Who we are: Life Reimagined Constructive Bio is a VC-backed biotechnology start-up based in Whittlesford, Cambridge. Our breakthrough technology harnesses the power of genome rewriting and genetic code reprogramming to make valuable products that positively impact the world. We will use our platform to turn cells into bio-renewable factories to produce novel molecules that were previously inaccessible to natural biology, with diverse applications in industries spanning healthcare, biological research, materials and electronics. Constructive Bio is a spinout from Professor Jason Chin's laboratory at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. Learn more about the Chin lab achievements here: https://www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/ccsb/jason-chin/ We want to build a team with trust and respect for each other and create a culture of collaboration, openness, curiosity, and scientific excellence. We are built on three principles: We imagine: We think big and plan our own path for success. We pioneer: We take action and grow together as one to break moulds. We deliver: We take ownership and work together to deliver excellence. Overview of role We are looking for a motivated bioinformatics software engineer to join our bioinformatics team. The successful candidate will develop software and data management infrastructure to support the scaling of our whole-genome synthesis platform. Our ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience within a bioinformatics team in an industrial (biotech/pharma) setting. They will be an excellent communicator and passionate about bringing good software engineering practice to multidisciplinary bioinformatics teams. As an early member of the team, you would have the opportunity to make a big impact in the development of our platform. Key responsibilities: Develop, maintain and run robust pipelines for routine QC and analysis of short and long-read sequencing data Collaborate closely with experimental scientists and the wider computational team to understand data requirements and deliver insights Develop data visualisation solutions to democratise access to and interaction with ‘omics datasets for experimental scientists Ensure that laboratory data (strains, DNA constructs, sequencing data etc) is tracked and stored with a scalable solution that is accessible for both experimental scientists and bioinformatics pipelines Be a champion of best practices for bioinformatics software (such as containerisation, code reviews, version control, etc) Regularly communicate progress, results and challenges with the wider R&D team Requirements: A BSc or MSc degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Molecular Life Sciences or similar. Demonstrated experience of working as a bioinformatician or scientific software developer in an industrial/biotech setting or within a dedicated bioinformatics team. Experience in working with Python for data processing, analysis and visualisation. Experience working with workflow management systems (eg Nextflow). Experience developing and deploying pipelines in a cloud computing environment. Familiarity with common bioinformatics software and workflows for analysis of sequencing datasets (such as variant calling and RNA-sequencing). Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team. Desirable: Experience developing and deploying web applications Experience of working with and designing databases would be an advantage Experience deriving biological insights from ‘omics datasets Experience of integrating computational workflows with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), such as Benchling What’s in it for you? Why work at Constructive Bio? We are a small but rapidly growing team - as an early member, you will be immersed in different aspects of the early company set up and there will be ample opportunities for personal development. This is a unique chance to make a big impact in our platform and company culture.
