* Vacancy for Research Data Specialist at the DCC
Vacancy for Research Data Specialist at the DCC
21 February 2021
Glasgow
Full-Time
The work
The research data specialist role in the DCC is designed to allow people with a wide range of backgrounds, skills, and pre-existing knowledge to engage in all of the DCC's areas of activity, which relate to open science, FAIR data, research data management and reuse, and the curation of digital materials. The activities include:
1. International projects such as FAIR's FAIR, EOSCPilot, and FAIR4Health;
2. Consultancy for research-performing organisations, policy-makers, and others;
3. The development and delivery of training;
4. Events such as IDCC, RDMF, and the RDA Plenaries;
5. The delivery of services such as DMPonline.
Initially, you'll spend about 60% of your time on the FAIR's FAIR project, a H2020-funded consortium where the DCC plays a major role. How the rest of your time is spent will depend on your knowledge, areas of interest, and ongoing projects. Consultancy and training present varied demands based on client requirements. The work is diverse, and there are ample opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills.
About you
Your previous experience could come from a variety of settings, such as research, supporting research, or any environment where creating, reusing, and understanding data is crucial. You could have qualifications in sciences, arts, humanities, engineering, medicine, or any relevant area. Experience in data management and reuse is essential, alongside an understanding of open research principles and FAIR data principles. While you may not be an expert in everything we do, you should be eager to develop your expertise and demonstrate the aptitude to do so. Flexibility is necessary, as the balance of our work changes yearly; this role is not suitable for someone with a narrow research interest.
Collaboration is key; you will work both independently and as part of a team within the DCC and with various organisations worldwide. During the interview, we will likely ask for examples of your collaborative experiences.
The context
The DCC is a consortium with staff at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Your employer will be the University of Glasgow, but we operate as a single team across both organisations. Most of our work is collaborative, and we have a diverse team reflecting our international outlook. Experience in collaborative working is ideal but not essential; enthusiasm and understanding of collaborative work are crucial. Once COVID-19 restrictions ease, expect significant international travel. Currently, we do not expect the successful candidate to relocate to Glasgow immediately and welcome applications from anywhere.
