Flexible working: shift patterns involving a mix of early, late and night shifts, including weekends. Due to the nature of the work this is an office-based role.
About Us
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
The Role
As a Trainee Operations Analyst, you'll join a team working in shifts to identify serious and often hidden threats from the intelligence our teams gather - and to provide a rapid response to operational teams working around the clock. You'll work closely with colleagues across MI5 to understand their requirements and learn how to use a range of tools and techniques to assess intelligence, including audio files, images and written communications. You'll help provide key insights and valuable breakthroughs that help shape operations all year round.
About You
You don't need any experience in analysis or working shifts to apply - but you will need at least a GCSE grade C/4 in English Language and a full UK driving licence. You should enjoy solving problems and puzzles, and be resilient and patient, as you may not always get the right answer from what you're analysing. You'll be friendly, yet clear and to-the-point, especially when working on something time-sensitive.
Training and Development
Upon joining, you'll undertake a three-month training period involving a mix of classroom studies and time spent with our analysis teams. You'll then be expected to work as a Trainee Operational Analyst for the next three years, after which time you could apply for another analysis role or positions in other departments.
Rewards and Benefits
You'll receive a starting salary of £39,610, including shift and weekend allowance, rising to £42,257 after the first year, plus other benefits including:
1. 25 days' annual leave automatically rising to 30 days' annual leave after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days' public and privilege holidays
2. Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
3. Personal Learning Budget
4. Interest-free season ticket loan
5. Excellent pension scheme
Equal Opportunities
At MI5 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
What to Expect
Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. You will be given more information about what to expect at each stage as you progress through the application process.
Before You Apply
To work at MI5, you need to be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. This role requires the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV).
Right to Withdraw Statement
Please be aware that we withhold the right to bring forward the closing date for this role from the original closing date once a certain number of applications have been received.
