JETP and Energy Transition Associate - 2 year fixed term contract in London, United Kingdom
The Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) is a global coalition of financial institutions committed to accelerating the decarbonisation of the economy in line with governments' commitments under the Paris Agreement. Financial institutions - numbering over 675 firms from 50 jurisdictions - have committed to the goal of net zero by 2050, in line with science-based pathways to limit warming to 1.5 degrees C. GFANZ was established in 2021 as a forum for delivering sector-wide solutions for net-zero transition, helping to ensure high levels of ambition are met with credible action that supports transition globally. As a key focus, GFANZ is working with local and global partners to unlock transition finance in support of emerging markets and developing economies seeking to accelerate their energy transitions. Our work is organised through a CEO-led workstream on Mobilising Capital progressing cross-cutting solutions informed by country-specific work in support of Country Platforms including Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs), and we input to wider policy initiatives such as those in support of the COP and the G7/G20.
To support our exciting work on JETPs and wider energy transition, we are looking for a highly motivated and effective individual with 3-5 years of relevant experience, who will play a critical role in supporting the JETP and Energy Transition team to deliver on our strategic and technical work. The role implies gaining a strong understanding of our strategic vision, clear understanding of the role GFANZ can play, the key deliverables and timelines, and – critically – being the lynchpin in helping us to follow through in delivering our work. This varied and interesting role will involve delivering research and analytical work, organizing meetings, and preparing written and presentation materials, supporting engagement with our JETP working groups and external partners, tracking and reporting of progress, and supporting problem solving where issues arise. The successful candidate will enjoy a rapid introduction to the opportunities and challenges around energy transition in emerging market economies, and what steps can be taken internationally to better mobilise private finance.
This role will be in the GFANZ central secretariat in London and involves working with the entire team including JETP country leads in Vietnam and Indonesia. The role will involve regular collaboration with the wider GFANZ secretariat including with the capital mobilization and policy teams.
We'll trust you to:
1. Work across the team to help keep us on schedule by tracking strategic goals, deadlines, and key milestones, and ensuring we are delivering the key outputs to meet these.
2. Coordinate operational processes necessary to keep the team running smoothly, including supporting engagements with the JETP Working Group of financial institutions, wider GFANZ secretariat and stakeholders, International Partners Group stakeholders, and local government stakeholders.
3. Lead on preparation for major trips and events, including preparation of programmes, speaking remarks, draft press statements, and briefings.
4. Prepare impactful and analytically rigorous written work and presentations to support our work, including to update leadership and engage our JETP working groups, and to support our contributions to the country-led JETP work.
5. Manage special projects aligned with the strategic priorities of the team across both the Indonesia and Vietnam JETPs, and in support of our wider energy transition and capital mobilization priorities.
6. Build and maintain strong relationships across the JETP team, across the GFANZ secretariat, and with internal and external stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements:
1. A relevant degree and/or 3-5 years of relevant work experience perhaps as a management consultant working on climate policy, economic or financial policy, public administration or business or finance.
2. Experience and knowledge of the energy transition with knowledge of any of the power sector, financial sector and challenges faced in emerging markets a bonus but not expected.
3. Very strong organisational skills and demonstrated ability to support structured progress across a team on complex projects with many moving parts.
4. A strong team player, able to work constructively and collaboratively across local and global stakeholders.
5. Excellent ability to synthesize complex sets of information and develop written and visual summaries that engage and inform stakeholders.
6. Proven experience of working effectively with stakeholders across levels and sectors.
7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and visual presentation skills.
