SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. A major part of this is delivery of the EGL1 HVDC link in Joint Venture with National Grid. The EGL1 Contract Manager will work as part of a skilled and professional multi-disciplinary contract and commercial (C&C) team within EGL1, formed of SPT, NGET and external staff. The project contract and commercial team form and control the main contractual interface with the principle contractors, interfacing with Delivery, Engineering, SHES, Finance and Commercial workstreams, along with interfacing into directorates within SPEN and NGET.
The Contract Manager, reporting to the Head of Contract and Commercial within Projects and Project Director (line management), will oversee the contractual communication with the contractors, working alongside QS and legal teams to deliver the employers obligations under the contracts and ensure consistency in approach across contracts.
The positions may require frequent travel to various locations in the UK and occasional travel within Europe. The individual should be prepared to manage teams working at different project locations.
What you’ll be doing
1. Lead areas of contract and commercial management & implementation (in conjunction with Quantity Surveyors, Legal representatives and Project Managers).
2. Establish healthy contractual and commercial relationships with contractors and advise on alternative forms of contract and procurement arrangements.
3. Contract awareness and ability to readily liaise with legal experts.
4. Preparation of formal contract communications and handling of claims/disputes.
5. Liaise and support the PMO team to ensure timely and clear reporting throughout the business.
6. Support the development, maintenance, and oversight of the wider HVDC pipeline.
7. Deliver effective stakeholder management of the HVDC EPC Contractors through the development, implementation, and monitoring of KPI’s and contractual arrangements.
8. Identification of lessons learned and required improvements and implementation of these at the front end of the process.
9. Provide contract management expertise/guidance to Business users and expertise/guidance to QS’s.
10. Influence Project Managers and the commercial and contract team to continuously improve the focus and management of contractual matters.
11. With the Project team, undertake monthly project reviews identifying mitigation of any potential commercial risks/disputes.
12. Identification of project workload requirements & coordination of resources.
13. Collaborate with EGL1 Management Team including Director to review and implement decisions associated with all commercial and contractual escalated matters.
What you’ll bring
1. Construction contract experience of major infrastructure delivery.
2. Legal experience or close experience of working with legal experts.
3. Experience in claims/dispute management.
4. Degree in relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
5. Contract management / Contractor relationship management experience (in EPC type contract ideally FIDIC Silver Book).
6. Proven experience of line managing QS/commercial/contract teams in a high value project/portfolio environment.
7. Experience of implementing strong governance, control and risk management frameworks for contract and framework management.
8. Experience of developing and managing Supply Chain.
9. Strong influencing skills when working with external and internal parties.
10. Strong interpersonal skills given requirement to interface with multiple stakeholders and external contractors.
11. Proven verbal and written communication skills.
12. Proven analytical and decision-making skills.
13. PC knowledge of Microsoft applications.
14. Knowledge of the regulatory framework applicable to electricity networks.
