ST ALOYSIUS’ COLLEGE: THE SCHOOL
St Aloysius’ College is unique. Scotland’s only Jesuit school is situated at the very heart of the city of Glasgow, with a large campus right next to the Glasgow School of Art and near to the Royal Conservatoire, few schools feel quite so much part of the city. Our iconic green blazer is as much a part of the city as the Clyde and Central Station! More than 800 students are educated across the Junior and Senior Schools (3-18). The College has a proud tradition of academic excellence with results placing us amongst the top performing schools in the country. There is good demand for places at the key entry points to the schools. The College occupies a range of buildings from the imposing and listed 1859 Hanson Building, through the award winning Clavius Science Building to the £8 million sports complex at the very heart of our site.
The College is proud of its traditions but is forward looking and determined to continue with its vision to create ‘men and women for others’ for the next 160 years and beyond. We are proudly independent and members of HMC but we are also linked to the worldwide Jesuit network of schools educating over 2.5 million students worldwide. This brings unique opportunities for training, development and engagement with leading schools across the globe.
The College is proudly a Jesuit and Catholic school but its community is diverse.
THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
The Mathematics Department provides a core programme for all pupils in S1-S4. In keeping with the Characteristics of Jesuit Education, the Department seeks to assist in the total formation of each individual by promoting sound intellectual formation in mathematics and numeracy.
The Department includes four teachers of Mathematics, and two who are also dual qualified in Physics. Pupils in S1 and S2 follow a broad general education in Mathematics and Numeracy, before embarking on National 5 Mathematics in S3 and S4. Higher and Advanced Higher Mathematics is offered in S5 and S6, as well as Advanced Higher Mathematics of Mechanics.
The department enters UKMT competitions at all levels as well as Enterprising Maths and other local and national initiatives.
We have close links with our on-site Junior School, and frequently teach lessons there and visit to provide support to colleagues and pupils.
The department is dynamic, innovative and fosters an atmosphere of achievement, enjoyment and success. The department prides itself in achieving outstanding results in SQA examinations. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at all certificated levels up to National 5.
Staff are encouraged to develop lessons that will inspire and motivate pupils to enable them to reach their full potential. We would look to the successful candidate to pursue a variety of pedagogical approaches in class and develop resources to support lessons and courses. St Aloysius’ College also encourages staff to take advantage of continuous life-long professional learning opportunities to update their skills and improve their knowledge.
