Job summary The Wessex Regional Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Cancer Service is looking to appoint an enthusiastic staff nurse to take a key role in the running and further development of the service. Based at the Southampton Cancer Centre, Southampton General Hospital (SGH). A dedicated age appropriate facility for TYA patients (aged 16-24 years), funded by a charitable grant from the Teenage Cancer Trust, was opened at SGH in September 2013. It comprises 6 inpatient beds and 4 day care areas. The Unit serves young adult patients in the Central South Coast Region, Dorset and the Channel Islands. The post holder will be a pivotal member of the TYA multidisciplinary team which provides medical, social, psychological and emotional support to this patient population. The team comprises site specific oncology/haematology/palliative care consultants who have a specialist interest in the care of the TYA patient group, TYA nurse specialists and a lead nurse along with TYA specialist social workers and youth support workers funded by the YLvsC and the Teenage Cancer Trust. In addition, the team comprises specialist physiotherapists/occupational therapies/dietetics and psychologist. TYA nurse specialists are also based within the region providing geographical outreach.
