Job overview
We are looking to recruit a suitably qualified Blood Transfusion Practitioner with relevant experience. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a role that is varied and requires a high degree of autonomy. You will work closely with a range of teams and disciplines including the Blood Transfusion laboratory, core trainers, senior nurses, doctors, anaesthetists and theatre staff.
You will play an active and key role in the Trust's hospital transfusion committee and demonstrate leadership to carry out the objectives. The role involves working with the regional transfusion committee and liaising with other Transfusion Practitioners across the region. We are looking for someone who is confident with incident investigations and has good inter-personal skills especially for training a wide group of staff in blood collection and administration.
You will be based at the Birmingham Children's hospital. However, there is an expectation that there will be close working with the Transfusion Practitioner at the Birmingham Women's Hospital site and cross-cover will be required.
Applications are welcome from Biomedical Scientists, Nurses, Theatre Practitioners or Midwives who have experience as a transfusion practitioner or have experience within the transfusion pathway relevant to their current role.
Main duties of the job
They will have clinical responsibility for improving blood transfusion practice in line with BSH Guidelines and patient blood management principles. The successful applicant must be able to make informed decisions within their own area and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards, objectives and targets are met. The candidate must be able to work with all regulatory bodies for full BSQR compliance and be able to assist with any compliance visit by the regulatory authorities. The role of the Transfusion Practitioner will be key to the Trust risk management strategy and its commitment to Clinical Governance.
The post holder will develop, coordinate and deliver a comprehensive multi-professional education programme in all aspects of blood transfusion practice and will also be required to be an administrator for the electronic blood tracking system.

Person specification
* Must hold a valid HCPC or NMC registration.
* Must demonstrate experience of blood transfusion either via laboratory work or in administration of blood products.
* Completion of E-learning for Health Transfusion modules.

Our current Mental Health Services division may be transferring the provision of its services to Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust (BSMHFT). Whilst at present you are applying for a position within Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation should you be successful in gaining a position within Mental Health Services, your employment may in the future be transferred over to BSMHFT.
