Background
Birmingham Law School is seeking to appoint two Associate Professors in Law to contribute to the leadership and delivery of research, teaching, engagement and impact in the School. This investment in excellent scholars to join our thriving community is open to applicants working in any area of law.
Birmingham Law School is the largest discipline in the College of Arts and Law at the University of Birmingham. Birmingham Law School is highly successful and ambitious, ranked among the top 10 in the UK 2021 Research Excellence Framework assessment, providing students with an exciting, challenging and research-driven education. Staff make major contributions to legal debates and to the policy-making process through world-leading research outputs and impact.
Role Summary
We are looking to recruit experienced academic researchers with a strong and sustained international research and education profile, evidenced by a substantial record of high-quality outputs, external grant funding and a proven ability to plan and lead the delivery of innovative research-informed teaching.
You will contribute at a senior level to research, teaching, and administration. In addition, you will be expected to contribute to academic citizenship, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.
Main Duties
Research
* To pursue sustained research activity through original research and scholarship, including other research-related contributions through conference papers and presentations and/or consultancy projects and advice.
* Contributing to the management of research activities and/or supervising other research staff.
* Leading successful funding bids.
* Consistently publishing internationally excellent research, with some research regarded as world leading.
* Supervising and examining PhD students, both within the institution and externally.
* Providing expert advice internally and externally.
* Peer reviewing articles for peer-reviewed academic journals and grant applications.
* Leading sustained impact activity including public engagement.
* Developing novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research being pursued.
Education
* Making a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject.
* Leading on the management and the development of approaches to teaching and learning.
* Leading on curriculum design at module and programme level.
* Actively engaging students in curriculum design.
* Co-supervising doctoral students to completion.
* Leading the development of teaching, learning and assessment policies and strategies.
* Undertaking own teaching, which will include teaching and examining courses at a range of levels.
Management/Administration
* Lead activities in the School and represent the School on College/University committees.
* Making an important contribution to the development and running of the School.
* Leading a successful international engagement at School or College level.
* Developing and managing staff and resources in support of major research and/or teaching activities.
* Promoting a culture that embeds equality and values diversity and inclusion.
Citizenship
* Identifying wellbeing issues within the School/College/University and developing appropriate solutions.
* Mentoring and coaching of colleagues, particularly those in the early stages of their career.
Person Specification
* A PhD relevant to the research/teaching area or equivalent qualifications.
* Demonstrated excellence in at least Research, with competence in Learning and Teaching and Management and Administration.
Research Requirements
* High level peer esteem as evidenced by an excellent reputation in the UK and often internationally.
* Successful and sustained supervision of doctoral students to completion.
* Substantial and sustained research income generation.
Learning and Teaching Requirements
* High national reputation for the development of teaching and learning excellence.
* Successful and sustained use of a range of appropriate teaching methods.
* Track record of substantial and sustained high value impact on the enhancement of the student experience.
Management and Administration-Related Requirements
* Successful and sustained performance in significant administrative/managerial roles.
* Actively promotes equality and diversity to internal and external stakeholders.
