Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly skilled HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly Histopathology team. The Histopathology Service within MFT is based at three sites; Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, and The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. The service processes approximately 80,000 specimens annually.
The successful candidate will be based at the Wythenshawe Laboratory; however, there is the expectation to work across the MFT site.
Successful candidates will work with Advanced Practitioners, as well as other members of the department’s dissection team, dealing with a range of specimen types covering areas such as dermatology, gastrointestinal, breast, and cardiothoracic. You will be expected to achieve competency in the dissection of category A, B, and C specimens. You will also support the Advanced Biomedical Scientist team within the department to maintain high quality technical work and maintain high scientific standards. Band 7 candidates must have completed the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection including the breast module. Candidates who are HCPC registered Clinical Scientist with a single specialism in Histopathology (Cellular Science) and significant experience in dissecting breast specimens will also be considered. Consideration will also be given to scientists undertaking the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in breast dissection, which will be paid at Annex 21 until completion of the qualification.
Main duties of the job
1. Maintain/develop competency in tissue dissection of category A – C specimens.
2. Completion of personal and work-related audits evidencing competence to practice in line with ISO 15189 and RCPath standards.
3. Support the Advanced Biomedical Scientists within the department with the day-to-day management of laboratory staff ensuring service delivery.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Relevant BSc Degree in Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent) acceptable for registration with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
* State registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist.
* Evidence of CPD.
* IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice Histological Dissection (Band 7) or Completed NHS STP program in Histopathology.
* Training for Trainers Qualification.
* Fellowship of IBMS.
* Working toward the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection (Band 7 Annex 21).
* Experience in Breast or CT Dissection.
Knowledge
* Knowledge and experience of Quality Management Systems in Pathology.
* Proven Leadership and supervisory experience.
* Extensive post-registration experience in Histopathology.
* A sound understanding of basic physiology, pathology, and scientific principles relevant to Histopathology.
* Maintain professional knowledge including local and national initiatives.
* A thorough understanding of H&S legislation.
* A wide knowledge of current developments in the NHS.
* Evidence of training and supervising staff in tissue dissection.
Training and Experience
* Experience of operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining complex laboratory equipment.
* Experience in service improvement within pathology.
* Experience of training BMS and MLA staff.
* Experience in working towards ISO 15189 standards.
* Experience of using QPulse.
Skills and Abilities
