Specialist Pharmacist (Band 7) - 317 Pharmacy - FH - The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – Tyne and Wear
We are looking for an outstanding individual to join our well-established team of clinical pharmacists, providing a comprehensive and high-quality clinical pharmacy service across the Trust’s medical and surgical services.
The post will be initially based within the surgical team providing a clinical pharmacy service to a variety of surgical specialties across the trust. You will join a team of experienced pharmacists and technicians covering the directorates of General Surgery, Urology, Musculoskeletal Services, Neurosciences, and ENT / Plastics / Ophthalmology / Dermatology. The postholder will be given the responsibility for a variety of clinical areas under the supervision of the lead clinical pharmacist for the specialist area and they will get the opportunity to periodically rotate through these areas building experience and expertise in a wide variety of clinical settings. There may also be the opportunity to rotate through the medicines directorate.
You will be expected to attend consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate, and also provide support and training to nursing staff, pharmacy technicians, and junior pharmacists. You will also help support senior pharmacy staff in promoting the safe, effective, and economic use of medicines via audit and guideline development.
There are many opportunities to participate in training and education, and we have strong links with the local pharmacy and medical schools. All pharmacists are expected to participate in in-house education sessions for pharmacy staff. There may also be opportunities to deliver training sessions to junior doctors and medical students.
Our staff oversee over 2 million patient contacts each year, delivering high standards of healthcare from the following sites:
* Freeman Hospital
* Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)
* Health Innovation Neighbourhood (on the former Newcastle General Hospital and Centre for Ageing and Vitality site)
* Newcastle Dental Hospital
* Newcastle Fertility Centre
* Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria
* Northern Genetics Service
These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.
This post will support, and further augment, our clinical pharmacy service to both RVI and Freeman sites on a rotational basis. Attendance at consultant-led ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings would also be required.
We require motivated and enthusiastic pharmacists, who are registered with the GPhC, with significant post-qualification experience, to become members of our team. Candidates who possess an independent prescribing (IP) qualification will be encouraged to use this within an agreed sub-specialty, once training objectives are complete. Our team currently supports IP activity in many inpatient areas.
Successful candidates will be expected to participate in extended hours services for one year post-appointment and then subsequently in the weekend and Bank Holiday rota, which provides clinical pharmacist support on RVI/Freeman sites, 7 days a week.
* To develop and maintain clinical pharmacy services in a specialist area or directorate within the overall Trust clinical pharmacy strategy.
* To participate in the provision of other pharmacy patient services functions.
* To promote the safe, rational, and cost-effective use of medicines by working closely with nursing and medical staff and health care managers.
* To perform the professional role of a Registered Pharmacist, including advice, supervision, and co-operation with colleagues, particularly in relation to support/cover for absent colleagues.
* To support patients to achieve their health goals in relation to medicines by providing person-centred care.
