The Senior Design Manager will be responsible for:
1. Leading the Design team including Design Managers and Design Assurance Coordinators in relation to the assets requiring Stage 5 design development.
2. Management of all Design activities related to the shaft fit out including blockwork, fire-proofing, steelwork, doors, hatches, drainage, etc., and architectural design of the shafts and headhouses including miscellaneous steel works, façade/cladding, and roofing systems. You will also be involved with the integration of MEP systems.
3. Liaison with design consultant, MEP team, Design Integrator, Engineering team, Construction team, QA team, Commercial team, Planning team, and Cost control to provide relevant design input.
4. Responsible for raising Non-Conformance Records (NCRs) and associated Defects as required, and assisting with the resolutions to ensure a 'best for project' solution is sought.
5. Ensure that relevant design and engineering, interface and temporary works management plans and assurance plans are adhered to, within the area of responsibility.
6. Be familiar with, and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health & Safety and Environmental Policies.
7. Reporting: management and monitoring of the Stage 5 design progress, and reporting these to the Design Lead, Senior Management, and the client in the regular reporting meetings as required.
8. Management (i.e. programme, contract, scope, progress, change, compliance, governance, etc.) of the Stage 5 design including specialist designers and subcontractors responsible for their own design elements.
9. Ensuring that design accommodates designing for maintenance and health, safety, and welfare during construction and in-use (Operation and Maintenance, etc.).
10. Ensure that design change is managed, monitored, and the implications (including derogations/departures) are assessed and authorized, as appropriate.
11. Ensure that design risks are recorded, communicated, and mitigated wherever possible.
12. Ensure the completion of constructability reviews.
13. Identify and implement opportunities for optimization of project programme.
14. Ensure that any proposed changes in materials or construction are checked against the original design specifications and appropriate action taken, ensuring the design is compliant and in line with requirements.
15. Ensuring compliance with the project processes and procedures.
16. Review Technical Queries (TQs)/RFIs, FCDs, and NCRs as required, as well as Material Compliance Records (MCRs).
17. Ensuring the required Lead Designer duties are undertaken as delegated and required by the project.
18. Management of Design integration and change control during construction.
19. Promote best practice in safety management through application of risk assessment and ensuring CDM 2015 regulations are considered in the design and challenging the designer when required.
20. Fostering Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the Design teams and ensuring collaborative working, the right behaviours, and culture within the team and with subcontractors, suppliers, and any other third parties.
Required Qualifications & Skills
1. Educated to degree level or higher (preferably BEng or higher (MEng, MSc)) and hold relevant professional qualification.
2. Thorough knowledge of construction of shafts and headhouses with focus on fit-out and architectural elements and interfaces with MEP.
3. Experience of large complex projects where involvement with multi-discipline integration was required.
4. Extensive technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices.
5. Thorough understanding and application of the CDM Regulations 2015.
6. Sustained Continuing Professional Development.
7. Experience in project-based design and management across all project stages.
8. Strong understanding of Engineering Principles and extensive technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices.
9. Experience of managing the challenges associated with multi-disciplinary teams.
10. Understanding of digital engineering in design and construction phases and of using the Digital Plan of Works.
11. Strong communication and leadership skills.
