We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Blood Sciences Laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA).
In this role, you will support our Biomedical Science (BMS) team within Clinical Biochemistry at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals Trust.
The position may require flexible hours, with shifts between 08:00 and 20:00, Monday to Friday, as well as occasional weekend work.
The successful candidate will be required to work across sites, providing blood science services (Watford or Hemel Hempstead Hospital).
In addition to working in the Clinical Biochemistry laboratory, providing support to these areas on a rotational basis, the successful candidate will also be required to work in the specimen reception area at times.
The post holder will work closely with HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists, observe and implement the policies and procedures relevant to the role, including the Chemical Pathology Laboratory Manual and departmental Health & Safety Policy.
The post holder must also comply with practices and procedures as dictated in the departmental Standard Operating Procedures. Additionally, they will liaise with the Chemical Pathology Manager, the Training and Quality Leads and Clinical and Nursing staff to integrate with the services provided by the Team.
To receive specimens, enter patient and test details into the Pathology computer system, prepare specimens for the Chemical Pathology and Haematology Laboratories and for sending to other laboratories.
To prepare reagents and assure storage conditions of reagent stocks.
To recover samples for analysis and to be responsible for post processing storage of clinical samples.
To perform maintenance and IQC where deemed appropriate on analytical platforms under the direction and supervision of HCPC registered BMS staff.
To perform basic analytical techniques deemed suitable under the supervision of HCPC registered BMS staff.
To work closely with registered biomedical scientist staff, to observe and implement standard operating procedures, to liaise with clinical and nursing staff.
To participate in the annual joint review process (Values Based Appraisal)
To participate in flexible working practices (shift patterns) and work at either site as required, for the smooth running of the service.
