Main duties of the job
To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care to the practice population with a focus on the delivery of evidence-based practice for patients presenting with long-term conditions and acute problems. This includes screening, assessment, treatment, and education, and taking an active role in supporting the practice to maximise achievement against local and national targets in respect of the GMS contract and Enhanced Services.
Experience
* Registered Nurse with up-to-date NMC Registration
* Must have worked in a Primary Care setting with knowledge of current policies, protocols, and national targets
Overview of our organisation
Cathays Surgery is a training practice and consists of 7000 patients with a supportive clinical team of 4 GP partners, 1 salaried GP, and an exceptional administration team. The surgery is located close to the city centre in the South East region with a large student population and is easily accessible with public transport.
Job Responsibilities
* Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs. Such tasks may include:
o Immunisation of children, adults, and travellers
o Diabetes/Asthma Management
o Family Planning
o Cervical Smears
o Travel Health
o UTIs
o ECGs
o STI Screening
o Venepuncture
o Wound care
o Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
o Requesting basic pathology tests, for example, urine culture, swabs
o Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to GPs as appropriate for chronic disease management
o Maintain and control injectable and oral drug stocks in the treatment room and doctors' surgeries
o Work with patients in order to support compliance with, and adherence to, prescribed treatments
o Provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication, medication regimes, side-effects, and interactions
o Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and apply principles of self-care
Non-clinical tasks including:
* Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses
* Maintaining GP and nurses' rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
* Undertake housekeeping duties including general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses' and treatment rooms
* At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records
* Attend and participate in weekly practice meetings
* Attend and participate in a monthly education meeting with other members of the nursing team
* Assist with the organisation and co-ordination of the provision of nursing services for the practice
* Utilise and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment
* Prioritise, organise, and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality
* Maintain a notice board in the waiting area designated for patient health care and education
* Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post

* To have a written professional development plan and to maintain an up-to-date portfolio which meets the requirements of registration with the RCN
* Cooperate with annual appraisal meetings
