Job Description
Head of North Region
£57,244 - £66,890 per annum
Permanent, Full time
Location: Fort George, Inverness
Ref: HES/24/33
At HES we endeavour every day to share and celebrate Scotland’s heritage here at home and across the world, protecting and conserving it now and for the future. We’re champions and caretakers of 5,000 years of history, a team of diverse skills united by a shared love of Scotland’s historic properties and the stories that bring them to life. If you’re an inspiring and collaborative leader, with great people skills, practical problem-solving skills and an innovative approach to the future, this is your chance to join our team, take your place in our history, and make a real difference across the North of Scotland.
Draw a line from Aberdeen to Fort William, and our North Region is the vast and rich array of history North of that line. From ancient cairns and standing stones to military forts and stately homes with rich collections, there is a lot to be inspired by. As Head of North Region, you will lead the operational teams caring for and sharing these sites. You’ll drive forward visitor operations and conservation activities, leading a large team of colleagues across a wide range of disciplines. You will bring strong leadership and communication skills to the team, creating a culture that empowers colleagues and enables decisions at a local level. Working collaboratively across organisational boundaries, you will inspire your people to engage with HES’s objectives, explore new opportunities for their development and raise the profile of their work.
At HES, historic sites are not only inspiring locations to visit, but they are also cherished places that enrich and inspire the local communities. In the North Region our working includes collaborating on economic regeneration, helping island communities connect, and finding new ways for local residents to experience our sites. You will represent HES at a senior level, identifying and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and partners to successfully grow our influence and income, facilitate our involvement in external initiatives and resolve potential conflicts at an early stage. You will proactively seek to understand the key activities and cultural climate across HES and throughout the public and heritage sectors. You will use this insight to build constructive partnerships with colleagues across the organisation and in related organisations.
You’ll be one of four Heads of Region in the Operations Directorate leadership team, led by the Director of Operations. As a team, you will be key to delivering a huge amount of the work done by the organisation, including a great number of projects from other teams. You will support the Director of Operations by introducing innovative solutions to make the most of the resources within the Directorate. Working with colleagues across the Regions and with your teams, you will prioritise and plan work in the most efficient way to deliver long-term care of our properties. You will bring a strong customer and business improvement focus to HES and be able to balance competing priorities, with an eye for detail as well as strategic vision. You will be tenacious and resilient, demonstrating exemplary personal judgement, initiative, and collaborative skill.
