Job summary
The post holder will be expected to deliver patient centred advice, support and care specifically for service users with pre-existing diabetes and to those who develop gestational diabetes (GDM) during pregnancy.
The post holder will be a key member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), working alongside the diabetes team of obstetricians, diabetologists, Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSNs) and dietitians. Through effective working practices, the post holder will continue the philosophy of jointly working with other health care professionals to develop a holistic support network for pregnant women with diabetes.
In addition to the clinical role, the post holder will aim to raise the awareness and improve standards of screening for diabetes and inpatient diabetes care through planning and implementation of specialised programmes of education and training.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide highly specialised advice to support women with pre-existing diabetes, those who develop diabetes during their pregnancy, their families and other health care professionals.
2. Address the needs of patients from different ethnic minority groups, their families and carers with respect to advice, support and educational materials provided in a variety of formats to meet their needs.
3. Work alongside the diabetes nurses in accessing digital blood glucose monitoring results.
4. Perform antenatal checks and review ultrasound findings and discuss with the patient and medical/obstetric team as necessary.
5. Provide parent education sessions for T1, T2 and GDM women and their partners, to discuss the intricacies of labour and delivery with diabetes.
6. Improve and develop education materials for women with diabetes and staff involved in their care.
7. Support postnatal ward staff in the reviewing and discharge of patients with diabetes.
8. Support the dietitians and DSNs in the education of newly diagnosed GDM women.
9. Educate ward staff regarding management of diabetes, including management of hypoglycaemia.
10. Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and Midwives Rules.
11. Record and report untoward incidents and complaints in line with Trust policy.
12. Keep accurate and contemporaneous notes in relation to the care you have provided and general management of diabetes in pregnancy.
13. Contribute to the yearly report and audit of diabetes in pregnancy.
14. Oversee the OGTT process, auditing and improving efficiency.
15. Supervise, support, guide, assist in the development of and assess the competency of junior staff.
16. Initiate change effectively in response to clinical and organisational demands and inform staff of concerns which may affect patient care.
17. Present at the monthly midwives mandatory training sessions.
18. Educate new band 5/6s in Kings protocols and management of diabetes.
19. Hold drop-in refresher sessions for AN, labour and PN midwives and MSWs in care of the woman with diabetes during pregnancy.
20. Carry out investigations concerning the OGTT/diabetes screening pathway through Inphase.
21. Carry out regular audit of the OGTT process for review and quality improvement.
22. Regular audit of the management of diabetes in labour and during steroids.

Education
Essential
1. BSc Midwifery (or equivalent)
2. Further education/specialist knowledge in diabetes management
Desirable
1. Completed the midwife prescribers course
2. Completion of leadership/coaching course
Skills and Experience
Essential
1. Completion of preceptorship year post qualification
2. Experience of caring for women with diabetes in pregnancy
3. Experience of providing education to staff/patients
4. IT literate with a working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint
5. All essential midwifery skills, especially AN and PN care
Desirable
1. Experience of leading a team
2. Experience of audit/service evaluation
