Locum Consultant in Adult Supportive and Palliative Medicine
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is expanding its innovative Palliative Medicine Consultant service.
We seek a colleague to play a central role in the delivery of a visionary single palliative medicine service.
This is a part time, 8 PAs position and fixed term for 12 months.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with the Clinical Service Lead in Palliative Medicine and the consultant team to:
1. Provide clinical leadership in palliative medicine across care boundaries.
2. Contribute to the development of consistent pathways across clinical care systems for patients with life-limiting malignant and non-malignant conditions including: Neurological, Cardiac, Respiratory, and Dementia Care Needs.
3. Play a key role in the development and/or delivery of all these service areas within community, acute, and hospice settings, including supporting the development of long-term condition pathways.
Job responsibilities
Clinical Duties
1. Encourage a holistic response to the care of patients and those important to them.
2. Develop Somerset palliative care services in line with appropriate guidelines and frameworks.
3. Support Somerset End of Life individualised care planning.
4. Provide senior medical palliative care clinical services to patients in various settings, predominantly within the acute inpatient setting at Musgrove Park Hospital (MPH) but also including in the community, outpatients, community hospitals, and St Margaret's Somerset Hospice.
5. Undertake out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in on-call cover on a 1 in 6 remote '2nd on call' basis. If out of hours work has included attending a unit, time in lieu will be considered to facilitate work-life balance.
6. Support the senior leadership team in the development of the Clinical Nurse specialist team at MPH.
7. Support people affected by incurable cancer within Somerset via Supportive Care outpatient clinics delivered in Taunton and surrounding areas.
Post-graduate Education
1. Supervise the education of doctors in training, helping with both their professional and personal development.
2. Ensure that junior doctors in their care are not overwhelmed by clinical commitments or overburdened by responsibilities inappropriate to their experience.
3. Responsible for the assessment and appraisal of trainees under their supervision.
Audit and Quality Improvement
1. Involved in service development via direct and supervised audit activity.
2. Participate in national care at the end of life (NACEL) audits, supported by the consultants in data collection and undertaking the subsequent action plans.
3. Include both audit and quality improvement methodology work, supported by an administrative team.
Research
1. Encourage research when appropriate to the professional development of the successful candidate and service development of the department.
Appraisal, Job Planning and Mandatory annual training
1. Participate actively in the annual appraisal and job planning process.
2. Attend the mandatory annual update training.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Medical Degree.
* Registered Medical Practitioner with a GMC License to practice.
* Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following:
o Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
o Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview.
o European Community Rights.
o Higher Medical Degree.
o Diploma in Palliative Medicine.
Experience
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in Palliative Medicine.
* Knowledge/experience of the primary care sector.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* Knowledge of responsibilities of doctors as set out in Good Medical Practice.
* Knowledge of Evidence Based Medicine and clinical effectiveness.
* Experience of palliative medicine for patients with non-cancer conditions.
* Research interests in Palliative Medicine with publications.
