The population in DoS prisons are some of the most complex, challenging and high risk Category A and B men and young people in the country. Prisons are spread across a wide geographical area but there is a close working ethos throughout the region. We encourage and support team working across sites. Psychologists in DoS have a range of responsibilities, which includes the assessment of high risk, complex and diverse cases, intervention work, consultancy, research, training and development, as well as providing supervision and line management to trainee psychologists. Many of the prisoners within the region are serving life/indeterminate sentences or very long determinate sentences. Offences include serious violent and sexual offences, terrorism offences and organised crime such as drug trafficking and armed robbery. Psychologists working in DoS form an integral part of prison life and work closely with local teams and senior managers to contribute to the day-to-day management of the establishment and the prisoners residing there; psychologically informed solutions to support progressive cultures, environments and regimes are actively embraced within the Directorate. Psychologists are also required to work closely with external agencies involved in the management of offenders. The region has a strong focus on the training and development of staff. We value the continuing professional development of all grades of staff within the region. In addition to accessing formally offered training events, we also provide a programme of grade neutral continuing professional development seminars, aiming to share the wide range of expertise held within our large staff group. We also support the attendance of staff at external conferences and events to ensure up to date knowledge is maintained, and then subsequently shared with the wider group. Current vacancies HMP Wakefield Close Supervision Centre (1 post) Close Supervision Centres are small, highly supervised units held exclusively within High Security prisons, that provide a multi-disciplinary approach to manage highly complex, disruptive, and high-risk prisoners who have demonstrated, or evidenced a propensity to demonstrate, violent and/or highly disruptive behaviour in custody. CSC Psychologists are central to the provision of a bespoke, multi-modal treatment model for prisoners residing within the Units in the context of a richer, relational environment. HMP Lowdham Grange (2 posts) Lowdham Grange sits within the Directorate of Security; it holds over 880 men convicted of a range of offences and accommodated across 14 wings and one Care and Separation Unit. The prison is currently going through a period of exciting change and development following its transition to HMPPS. We are currently looking to expand and develop our Psychology Team to work with us and wider colleagues to establish and embed a range of initiatives; opportunities likely to exist include contributing to overseeing and developing our clinical input into the Care and Separation Unit; supporting and managing our Young Adults; developing clinical input into Safer Custody; and providing clinical supervision to both our Forensic Psychologists in Training and our Facilitator Team in the delivery of high intensity interventions. HMP Belmarsh (1 post) HMP/YOI Belmarsh is a high-security prison in south-east London. It is one of 13 long term and high security prisons, but the only reception prison in the high security estate. HMP/YOI Belmarsh also operates a high secure unit (HSU). The Forensic Psychology team at HMP Belmarsh are integrated into the prison and there is strong clinical-operational joint working model within the prison and its functional areas. This approach enables the Forensic Psychology team to be heavily involved in a variety of clinical work alongside our operational colleagues. Qualified Psychologist posts at HMP Belmarsh allow professionals to have a high degree of autonomy and pursue areas of interest for professional development. Qualified Psychologists also lead on specific areas of business in the prison that contributes to the effective functioning of the prison.
