Applications are invited for Clinical Fellow posts in Neurocritical Care (Intensive Care) at The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, for a 6-month period, that can be extended to a year or more. We have ten posts available that will commence 6th August 2025. Interviews will take place early April 2025. The successful applicants will work under consultant supervision at a level best matched to their learning needs and experience.
Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise. This post is full-time and is covered by the Medical and Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of Service.
Main duties of the job
The posts would be suited to anyone wishing to experience intensive care medicine in a nurturing environment with a view to improving their curriculum vitae with the aim of applying for core training in intensive care medicine, emergency medicine, acute medicine, neurology or neurosurgery. Despite being a neurosciences intensive care unit, many of the principles of intensive care medicine remain the same as for a general ICU. The posts are also suitable for those wanting to further their experience of neurocritical care for specialist training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will
* Share the responsibility for the assessment, resuscitation and treatment of all patients referred to the Critical Care Unit, working as part of a team with the on-call ICU consultant.
* Work alongside our trainees on a full shift rota. This is a full shift rota and the successful candidate will be required to be resident in the hospital during the working hours allocated to them on the rota.
* Share the responsibility for direct clinical supervision and teaching of the trainee staff, nurses and medical students.
* Assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient critical care service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
* Carry out all duties at the highest possible standard taking responsibility for individual patients in their care.
* Comply with Trust Health and Safety policies and employ the basic principles of infection control practice to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
* Maintain good electronic clinical records and effective working relationships with medical, nursing and allied healthcare professionals on the critical care team.
* Take an active role in the departmental clinical governance activity.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.
Desirable criteria
* Postgraduate qualification.
* Enthusiasm to become involved in research activity.
Experience
Essential criteria
* Foundation year 2 competencies OR 2 years' work as a doctor after gaining medical degree.
Desirable criteria
* At least one post foundation year experience in medicine, EM, anaesthesia or ICM.
* Some experience of either NHS intensive care or NHS anaesthetics.
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
* Competent at assessment of the acutely unwell patient.
* Working knowledge of an ITU.
Desirable criteria
* ALS/ATLS/European Trauma Course certified.
* Attendance at ALERT, CCrISP, BASIC, IMPACT courses.
