Milestone have an expanding team of environmental specialists, and we have an exciting opportunity for somebody to join our ecology function to support with a growing and diverse pipeline of work. This rewarding role will provide exposure to a broad range of ecological aspects, helping to accelerate career development whilst helping our clients overcome a variety of challenges.
You will also get stuck into both fieldwork - anything from bat surveys on old bridges to Great Crested Newt licensed mitigation, water vole displacements or just some good old nesting bird checks – as well as the technical office-based work such as report writing and BNG Assessments. This role sits within the Environmental Technical Team, which acts as an in-house consultancy through delivery of specialist environmental and sustainability services both internally and externally. You will work closely with design & construction teams to deliver a full range of valuable ecological services in support of both Milestone and client strategic targets.
As the Ecologist your duties & responsibilities will be:
* Undertaking desktop studies and visiting sites to identify ecological constraints and opportunities.
* Delivering habitat & protected species surveys and ECoW support.
* Analysing and interpreting results from field surveys to provide practicable advice and guidance.
* Preparing reports in a range of formats to clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
* Supporting engagement with a range of stakeholders to increase awareness of ecological requirements and promote the ecology function.
* Office and site-based assistance with BNG assessments and subsequent mitigation / enhancement works.
* Liaising with statutory regulators, consultees, and stakeholders in relation to ecological constraints and opportunities.
Utilising and developing digital tools and technology to improve the efficiency of current methods and enhance capabilities.
Skills & Knowledge Requirements
* Demonstrable experience in an ecological consultancy role or similar.
* Degree level qualification in an environmental or related subject (desirable).
* Advantageous to hold or be working towards a Protected Species Licence.
* Enthusiastic and self-motivated approach, with a strong willingness to learn and develop.
* Comfortable working independently and using initiative to solve problems.
* Confidence to engage with a variety of internal and external teams and stakeholders and escalate issues when necessary.
* Ability to process and analyse large datasets in an organised and efficient manner.
* Passionate about achieving better ecological outcomes in a challenging and fast-paced industry.
* Ability to maintain a ‘can do’ attitude and manage conflicting priorities.
* Strong interpersonal and team working skills with the capability to recognise and adapt to constraints faced by other individuals/functions.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills.
* Willingness to travel across the UK and stay away from home for short periods when required.
* Working knowledge of GIS software (desirable).
Success Measures
* Support provided to contracts/projects to facilitate ecological compliance and delivering of optimal outcomes.
* Quality of deliverables (e.g. reports) relative to client requirements.
* Effective communication and engagement with contract/project teams and the wider Environment team.
* Managing own workload and time allocation to meet deadlines efficiently.
* Completing performance and development goals within agreed timeframes
